The Berkeley City Council will be voting soon to give its City Manager
a significant salary increase (8% or more). The logic is that this will
bring his salary up the the median of other City Managers in the local
area. The current salary is something like $230,000 with significant
perks.
We will see if this (sent to my City Councilperson) engenders any response:
"As my representative, I would like you
to vote against any pay raise for the City Manager (or any other high-level
employee).
It is absurd, with a massive economic downturn engulfing us, to be giving a pay raise
to someone who makes more than the Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court.
(need I list others?).
The President of the United States has frozen his top staffs' salaries. It is
incumbent upon you to be as responsible and free the salaries of Berkeley's
top staff.
I understand that a vote is coming up in the next few days.
Thank you."
