Ok heres my Johnny Damon input. Fuck all of your rants. mostly cause Damons not the bad guy here. He took a MUCH better offer, the last one he was going to get to play with a competitve franchise. This isn't a player going for the money, or betraying a team. This was a team betraying a player. Let me say I do not believe that Johnny Damon is worth 13 Mil per year, however not paying that price, or near to it (because if they had offered 48 mil for 4 years he would have taken it. they didn't budge cause they didnt believe him and they're idiots (not the good kind)) will end up costing them well over 20 million. The Red Sox currently have a hole at Centerfield, to go along with their hole at shortstop, backup first base, and the impending hole in Left Field. So to get a center fielder we would have to give up our most valuable commodity Pitching, of which we have little to begin with. So lets say we wanted to get a centerfielder...we'll be giving up either Matt Clement or Bronson Arroyo (unfortunately probably Arroyo, who is the better pitcher)and maybe a prospect for a much lesser player (i.e. Coco Crisp or Jermey Reed-gag). So you've just cost yourself a frontline starter or maybe even worse a starter/bullpen guy who gives you flexibility in all situations and have a weak replacement in center (unless you go after Torii Hunter, but that will cost you the farm). So assuming all this happens the Red Sox look like this-
Pitching:Unsure closer, 40 yr old recovering starter, 25 yr old ace with shoulder and thumb problems, MATT CLEMENT!!!!, Knuckleballer without a catcher, rookie fastballer who we're counting on to win 16, no left handed specialist, but other than that its ok, i think. (oh ya wells demands to be traded so i left him out)
Batting: Weak leadoff hitter, trot (can't hit lefties, has durability ISSUES), ORTIZ(but i'll explain why this aint so great shortly) somebody Mike Cameronesque at 4, V-Tek, Loretta, Lowell (ouch), Youk, and random shortstop, prolly a weak hitting one, just to shore up some d and cause all the good hitting shortstops have teams, and big contracts (you can blame the sox for that too if you'd like)
Fielding: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
The Ortiz Factor: Did anyone see that one saturday game when it looked like manny was gonna be traded and so he didnt play? Our Beloved Big Papi, and i may be wrong on this, got walked 4 times. This guy is a professional hitter. Hes not gonna steal you a base, or lay down a bunt or snare a line drive. He hits and he does it better than almost anyone. But without both Damon to get on base, and Manny for protection, he will be rendered useless. He'll still prolly knock in 30 homers, but watch what happens in late game situations, not to mention how many will now be solo shots. Expect the obp numbers to go up, and the rbis to come waaay down. And hes my favorite player (other than Pedro) ever.
Look thats why it really hurts...the reason it sucks is cause it was the Yankees. Not cause they're the Yankees but because they're in the division, and they are the reigning division champs like 8 times over. You do not bolster Division opponents. So they filled a gap and we opened up a bunch more. Sounds like it was worth 12 mil over 4 years to me. Oh and if u dont believe it was the Sox's fault, go back and listen to the press conference, they have the transcript at boston.com too. Peace.
Fare thee well johnny, you play hard and deserve your payday. You were never one of my favorites, but i respected you. and i still do. But i hate you now. just comes with the colors buddy...peace.
oh ya. i fuckin miss bill mueller.
