Yes I still live. I've been busy. But now I'm sorta not so let's see if I can get some semblance of my life back. I have read a lot of books lately because I don't do anything (well, that's soon going to change, more news at 11 about that) and some of them were good, some were not, so I thought I'd share in case people are looking for something to read this summer. Let us begin.
1. Sword of Truth Series by Terry Goodkind.- Richard is a normal woods guide until some magical stuff happens, he meets a really hot girl that is a real whiny bitch in the first book but then turns pretty awesome, and then he has to try and kill some bad guys and save the world. Magic is separated, like the force, and Richard just really hates communism and prophecy and tries to defy it, even though...he usually ends up fulfilling it anyways. Yes, I find it really hard to sum up 11 books that are basically one big storyline.
No I did not know these books existed until I watched the tv show, Legend of the Seeker. Which is/was campy, but I still enjoyed it (altho who really hates campy stuff, honestly?). It's on Hulu, go watch it if you're bored. There's 11 books and after reading The Dark Tower Series by Stephen King I wanted something long to read again. My only annoyances with these books are the endings always seem to magically fix themselves except the last couple and they're a bit preachy(screw communism!) But other than that, I had a good time.
2. The Wind Up Girl by Paulo Bacigalupi (I seriously just spelled that man's last name correct from memory-BAM!) - Forget gas, the new currency is calories and whoever can control food produce controls the world. Anderson is a calorie man who is secretly in Thailand trying to understand how the Thais are producing new foods that haven't been around in ages. Emiko is a wind up, a genetically altered new human from Japan(go fig) who wants to be her own master. And there are a ton of other people with their own agendas, and each one of them is tied to the fate of this city in Thailand and to each other.
It is a really, really hard book to read. It took me a really long time. Usually I read books in a day. The author throws you into this world without much pomp and circumstance so you spend the first few chapters just trying to figure all the Thai words out and basically, what the hell is going on. It was one of those books I couldn't decide if I liked or not until I finished it. And I did. It makes you think and it's a very creative but real possibility for the future. I just think it would've been a lot better if I hadn't been forced to fight my way through the beginning.
3. Sookie Stackhouse Series by Charlaine Harris - Do I really need to explain the premise of these books? A telepathic waitress falls in love with a vampire because she can read thoughts, and that kind of gets in the way of a relationship. But Bill the Vampire cannot be read and he can't glamour her, so they're all like WHAT?!?! and you get the drill.
I do nooooot like these books. I hate that they're from Sookie's perspective and I guess watching True Blood first has made me expect something more...idk, grown up? I mean, I have laughed, and I have read the first two and I will most likely read the others- after I watch True Blood first. I guess...read them for the experience? If you like True Blood? Oh True Blood, how dirty but awesome you are.
4. The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms by N.K. Jemisin- When Yeine's mother dies, she is summoned to Sky where she is put in the running to become the next ruler of the hundred thousand kingdoms. Yeine really isn't there to win(nor does she think she will when she meets her cousins), but to understand why her mother left in the first place. Finding the answer to that question leads her to dark places in the city of Sky and into the arms of four gods, chained to obey her bloodline, who have their own agenda in this play for power. It gets even more involved when she starts a semi relationship with one of them, Nahadoth, the god of darkness.
Okay if you have time, read the Sword of Truth Series. If you just want to read one book and you like fantasy and such, read this one. It was weird. It was really creative. It was sexy. It was also creepy. It's got some political stuff going without be overly obnoxious. It's also told in a way I haven't seen before. It's a first person that I didn't actually hate for once. She talks to herself and tells stories that are related and it sounds annoying but it worked. Nahadoth is like fandom!Draco so I can think of several people on my flist who would love him. Yeine was like what we all wish Bella Swan was really written like. Interest you yet? ;)
And that's all I got for now. Just started my new book, Boneshaker by Cherie Priest so I can't say anything about it yet, besides the opening chapter was amazingly descriptive and sweet.
