Do You See What I See? Part One

As Kenji stared at the girl on the television, he felt a righteous anger.

The newscaster told another story about the mysterious new savior of Tokyo: Sailor moon. A cameraman had caught a blurry picture of the heroine escaping after defeating another monster. She looked young; too young. She had to be about the age of his own daughter, which sent Kenji's blood boiling. How could any parent let their child go gallivanting around in a ridiculous (and, he noted, quite revealing) costume? Didn't parents know their children these days? His eyes and ears were always attuned to what his rambunctious children were up to. He prided himself on being a knowledgeable father, of being connected by respect and love to his children. He would never let Usagi or Shingo do something so dangerous. It was inconceivable.

He looked down the line of his family. Ikuko sat close to him, her dark eyes watching the tv with a slight cringe, as if the news story was painful to watch. Shingo sat on the floor, his legs bent up in the air with homework forgotten at his elbows. He glanced at the television with a scrunched up face, like the pleasant female correspondents voice was like nails on the chalkboard. And Usagi...

Kenji lowered the Sudoku tablet in his hand, his mind coming across something more puzzling. Where was that daughter of his anyways? At detention? The shrine? The mall? He realized he had forgotten her quick words of explanation as she ran out the door. He had been too caught up in a new game to listen. Kenji blistered, his cheeks growing red as he gazed back at the red, blue and white suited soldier. Maybe he was just like that girl's parents after all.
