So
this is what I've been working on for the past two years; the design and construction of BHP Billiton's new global headquarters.
My role has primarily been on the building services side, from design and development of the facility and building management system for the tenancy, along with ensuring that all equipment is thoroughly commissioned. Blah blah blah, no one has yet to fully understand what I do.
I was doing my last inspection of the floors on Saturday afternoon and thinking how strange it was to be handing this over to the client come Monday (today, actually). I've spent two years living this project and now D-Day is here and it's time to hand my baby over. While there's still work to be done, I do feel proud that people will move in and use this space. And, if I've done my job well, they'll never know just how complex the building services in this tenancy really are. They'll never question how the building knows to dim the lights when it's a sunny day, or how the air conditioner turns on five minutes before you walk into a meeting room, or how the lifts take you to your home floor without you having pressed a button or all the other minute design features that dozens of people have spent months working together on. At the end of the day, that's the best compliment you can get; that no one realises the complexity of the system.
I'm waiting for official photos to be released before I get to show you what a stunner this place is.
