So, I've finally finished playing Final Fantasy XIII. I'm not sure if I should be embarassed or proud that I've completed this game in a week and a half when it took most of my friends a month. But, God, I'm such a massive geek that I'm not even going to try and hide it. I had some trepidations about this game, what with a lot of the reviews claiming that it was too linear and lacked substance, both in storyline and character development. This got me to thinking that there was a real possiblity that FFXIII would be the first Final Fantasy game I would loathe.
However, having spent a good 70 hours on this game, I can honestly say that I loved it. It wasn't my favourite installment of Final Fantasy and sure, it wasn't the greatest game ever, but it was far from the shittiest game I've ever played. I could keep going on, but really, all there is to say is that this was the most beautiful game I've ever played. Final Fantasy cutscenes are always exceptional, but holy shit, the game play was amazingly gorgeous. So many times I had to stop, spin the camera around and just appreciate the details. There were times when the grass would sway with the wind, when there would be tiny insects flying around flowers, when you could see the freaking stitching on the character's clothing. Amazing.
I don't love the characters as much as I have loved others from previous Final Fantasy games, but, for me, this doesn't take away from the game. Everything just had that classic Final Fantasy feeling that reminds me why I love these games so much. Maybe if you'd never played a Final Fantasy game in your life, XIII wouldn't make sense, but as a hardcore fan, this really was a lovely game.
