As is the nature of my messed up sleeping pattern, I stumbled into the kitchen this morning (ie. afternoon) to make breakfast and heard something along the lines of, "Kevin Rudd, the former Prime Minister," coming from the radio. I know there's been so many rumours going around on a potential change of leadership, but I never really considered it a possibility. So yes, there I was, with toast in my hand mumbling, Former Prime Minister? FORMER?
It is a bit surreal to think that we finally have a female Prime Minister. I mean, good on Julia Gillard. Go her; she's probably worked her ass off for her entire career. While this is all super exciting for feminism, what I don't like about it is how exactly she got the top job. I don't pretend to know much about politics, but the way I see it, she's basically stabbed Rudd in the back and weaseled her way into it.
I shouldn't really care half as much, because to be honest I'm a liberal sort of person, but I do feel sorry for Rudd. No one really deserves to be ousted in that sort of manner. And while I didn't agree with him on most of his policies, I will commend him for trying to bring in an emissions trading scheme, which unfortuantely the Liberal Party opposed. On that topic, I'm going to side-step and go all environmental on you guys because even if you know nothing about climate change, please keep in mind that no matter what the government says, a carbon tax will NEVER work to curb emissions. The only way we can even begin to comprehend limiting our emissions is to implement an emissions trading scheme.
