Glitter & Doom, and white guys

Oh man.  Tom Waits announced new tour dates and every pore on my body is tingling to go.  It's going to be pricey, especially since he's not playing anywhere around here (the closest option is Atlanta), but I'm very seriously considering going all out and just cannonballing into this deep-rooted desire.  The shows I'm considering are Atlanta on 5 July and Jacksonville on 1 July.  Jacksonville will probably be less expensive, since the Fox Theatre in Atlanta is glorious as hell and the Times Union Center is... well, in Jacksonville.  But the Atlanta show is on a Saturday, which means Bill can travel (if he goes with me, of course), and the one on the 1st is on Tuesday, which would mean no Bill if he's still employed.  Ezra mentioned the Atlanta show, which is curious to me, as he lives much, much closer to Jacksonville.

Tickets go on sale in a week.  I'll be trying to buy tickets through the use of two phones, possibly three, and the interweb.  If I so decide, I will get these tickets.

I guess I'll be using a portion if not all of my Radiohead profits for this.

Speaking of shows.  I never really talked about the Kids in the Hall show Jon and I went to on the 30th.  I really enjoyed the performance.  With the exception of the proximity to the surrounding seats (whoever decided on the distance between rows hated tall people), our tickets put us in a pretty good spot.  It was good to see new material with a couple of rejuvenated old ones.

The guys didn’t seem to have let themselves go as much as I had feared. Dave Foley seemed to have lost that lame Poker show weight for the tour. Kevin McDonald is still my favourite. Bruce McCulloch is still Bruce McCulloch. Scott Thompson is still dirty, gay, and wonderful. And Mark McKinney is still that other dude who does the "I'm crushing your head!" stuff.  My passion has been renewed and Bill and I are watching the series from start to finish on DVD.

The show was held in a surprisingly non-major venue in Glenside, PA, just outside of Philadelphia. I dunno, maybe the Keswick Theater is bigger than I appreciated, but the place doesn’t even have a parking lot, and its about a 30 second walk from suburbia, no exaggeration. Jon and I kept trying to find a place to get high, but everywhere we went, we ended up in like someone's front yard.

Or maybe the Kids in the Hall simply aren't as big as I thought they would be.

One of the most amusing parts of our trip up there had nothing to do with the show.  I know this isn't going to wow anyone, but Jesus, so far I've laughed out loud at least a little every time I've pictured a still frame from this moment since it happened, so I'm going to capture it here forever:  We were headed from Moe's towards the AC Expressway again near the Hamilton Mall and, while stopped in front at a red light, I noticed the driver of the car stopped in front of the turning lane diagonally to our right was singing along to something quite passionately, just having a blast, all alone in his car.  I don't know why, but I immediately made this guy the object of my blunted sadism.
I said to Jon, "Dude!  Check out that guy belting it out in his car over there. I'm gonna stare right at him!"
A few moments passed and the guy, while singing, happened to look over at us and saw that I had clearly already been staring directly at him during his happy time.  He stopped mid-lyric and just sat there, completely still and expressionless until we passed.
Jon watched as this happened and started laughing, "Aww man.  You totally just ruined that guy's day!"
I don't know why, but I made a point to stay focused on the singer as we drove off.

It was like the most useless, tiny and absurd strand of a power trip I've ever had.

Bill and I spent the night in Philadelphia on Wednesday.  He had to work in Stowe for two days in a row and asked me if I'd like to find a place to crash in Philadelphia for the night.  We crashed at Ben's.

While there, my mere presence brought his house to ruin.  During an attempt to open the front door, I broke the knob off.  While we were watching The Whitest Kids U' Know and drinking mead, his faucets wouldn't stop running water and at some point during the evening, one of them just broke, causing the hot water tap to just run at full blast all night long.  I don't know how much water just went down the drain that night and following day.  And before I left, he snapped a beam on his futon while doing absolutely nothing to it.

It was good to see Ben.  I threatened him about things that'll happen to him if he doesn't come down to Jersey to visit his dad and myself soon.

Even though I've been working out pretty regularly and with considerable intensity, my calves were very sore when I got back from Philadelphia, and especially today.  I guess I just haven't had to speedwalk anywhere in a long while, so stressing the muscles I did for so many miles really did a number on them.  I learned a little more about Philadelphia while there from having to navigate it on foot for those two days, in the rain even.  It's definitely the more reliable way for me to learn where all the streets are in that god blasted town than trying to memorize their placements while driving past them.  Yay.

God I hope I get these Tom Waits tickets.
