I have no idea why I am updating instead of writing my "Critical Analysis of the Readings" for my TV class. It was just too damn tempting and I promised myself I'd make it quick. Seriously, why do I never learn?
I bought tickets for myself and a few of my friends this morning for Dave Matthews Band because I just learned yesterday that apparently they're coming here in December. I've never seen him in concert and I heard he puts on a hell of a show and it seems I'm into concerts lately so I figured I might as well. Apparently my friends deemed me the ticketmaster expert simply because I've bought tickets for a few concerts in the past little while on there. But all of those have been general admission so I didn't know what they wanted me to do about seat location and prices and all that stuff and it turned into a high pressure situation. Not a big fan of the high pressure situation. But it turned out ok. They apparently wanted the cheapest seats even if they were shitty (a concert philosophy I do not share, but I was willing to compromise) so we're pretty far away but at least we're going and I know I have someone to go with this time so I don't get screwed over. I'm still fairly upset about missing Jason Mraz but I'm trying to remind myself that it's over and there's nothing I can do about it now. I just hope that he comes back sometime soon. I really really do.
On that note, I need to write a bit about the John Mayer concert but I'm going to put it under a cut so that if you don't care, you don't have to read it. Deal?
This is mostly for me so I can remember all the stuff I wanted to remember about the concert but if you are interested in John Mayer's awesomeness by all means keep reading.
So John looks a lot more hobo-ish now with his plain black shirts and jeans and really long hair that falls in his face. Apparently he and Kalan share the same hair stylist. Note the similarities in mullet style:
Those aren't the best examples but I still see the similarity! I didn't take that picture of John, by the way. I didn't even bring my camera because I knew it was general admission and that we weren't getting there early and that I am really short so chances were I wasn't going to have the best view. And I didn't. Well, actually I could see about 86% of him (what did I say I could see of Jack Johnson? Like 13% or something?) and we were pretty close but if I had tried to take pictures it probably would have come out as people's heads, mostly. There was this one massive guy (not exaggerating, he was at least 6'3") standing in like the 3rd row and I'm pretty sure I heard at least 6 different people complaining about how people that tall should not be that close to the front. Seriously, though, it's just not right. There was also some chick in a cowboy hat (I think she must have gotten lost on her way to a Kalan Porter concert) who was blocking everyone's view with her huge hat, too. Not cool.
But anyways, back to John. So yeah he also has two new tattoos (well, new to me at least). One on the back of his left bicep that says "Home" and then one on the back of his right bicep that says "Life". You know, like his song? And he still does the guitar faces but they're hidden a bit by his hair now. And he does this new thing while playing where he sort of bops from side to side or back and forth. It's funny. And his trio apparently consists of a strange looking cracked out middle-aged man who appears to be speaking to someone invisible while he plays the bass (he's mouthing the words to the song sometimes, but sometimes it is something completely different), and a black guy who plays the drums. We were off to the side of the stage so I actually only saw the drummer at the very end of the show when they came out and bowed and stuff. But they do sound pretty good together. The only songs he played from his solo albums were "Something's Missing" (in which I called Danielle--we still have to talk about that because I got your text message but I'm interested to know if you could hear and everything! I figured it was pointless to try and talk because I couldn't even hear it dialing...) and "Daughters" but I still think I liked this concert better than the one I went to last year even though I didn't know all of the songs. Ok to make this shorter I'm just going to do bullets with my favourite things about the concert now......
- He did a bit of Kanye's West's song Gold Digger which everyone (including me) loved. You know Jamie Foxx's part? ("She take my money when I'm in need") Well, he worked that into one of his songs I think, I couldn't really tell, but it was definitely that song. I love that he and Kanye are friends.
- He did Daughters for the encore and everyone was singing along so he just stopped singing for the entire second verse and let us do it. It actually sounded pretty good! And it was also just really cool. John was all smiley and you could tell he was loving it. I remember it used to bother me when people made me watch that "Dashboard Confessional Live at MTV" thing because the audience was singing over him the whole time, but this was nothing like that. It was just cool.
- I love that he has no problem with swearing at all-ages shows. There was some little girl with her mom in front of us and he's all like "Alright, check this shit out!"
- At one point in the concert he was like "I'm just going to make some shit up, and you'll see how good it feels." He then proceeded to make up some song with a chorus that consisted of the words "I'm so tired of having sex dreams about girls I don't even like." The only other part of the song I remember was when he started just throwing girls names in like "Girls named Jen are trouble/ the same goes for Sarah too/and Jessica will mess you up..." I just love when he makes stuff up. It's so classic John.
- Around the middle of the concert he was over jamming with the drummer and I thought it was so cool that he was soloing with his guitar on the drummer's mic stand and then he proceeded to do something even cooler. Some girl in the front row had a camera so he took it from her and started taking pictures of himself with one hand while playing the guitar with the other. Then he threw away his pick and started using the camera itself to play the guitar. And it actually sounded good! So so cool.
Ok I can't remember anything else. Oh except that as we were leaving they were handing out Jeremy Fisher pamphlet type things with his bio and I was like "Ohmygod poor man's John Mayer!" Coincidence? Probably not. But yeah overall it was a really good night. I'm glad I got to go after all. Ok dammit this was supposed to be quick but in actual fact it took me 50 minutes!
