The strike was settled last night at 11:30pm, but school was still cancelled today. Last week, they raised the price of gas by 20 limpeiras and today they lowered it by 15 limpieras. That just goes to show that the gas companies were trying to gouge the people. Last night on the news I saw riot police macing and beating people who were just standing in the street with a Honduras flag. And everyone wonders why no one likes the police....
A bunch of the gringo teachers have begun monthly visits to an orphange called Mis Hermanos Pequenos just outside of Tegucigalpa. There are 600 kids ranging from infants to early 20's living on a huge ranch. We visit a couple of kids each month, and many of these children have never had visitors. When our group of kids first met us, I just about broke down into tears because this one little boy, maybe 5 years old, was going from person to person hugging us. We brought the children lots of food and played games with them for a couple of hours. The man who manages the orphanage has a daughter in my senior Calculus class, so it was really awesome for me to see what kind of work some of the parents of my students do.
I've recently posted some more pictures of Tegucigalpa and the trip we took to San Juancito. My user name on webshots is Hondurasjoyrunner, so check it out.
Back to planning!
