I am so ready to get lasered. My eye doctor changed my contacts from O2 Optix to Air Optix Aqua. The O2's are supposed to be two week lenses, and the Aqua's are supposed to be monthly. However, I have found the reverse to be true. My guess is because the Aqua's let in some much more air they also let in more allergens, which leads to the more frequent changes. Anyway, I have to order more lenses way ahead of schedule. (This annoys me to no end, because the new ones are twice the price of the old ones, don't last as long, and the doc won't switch me back to the old ones without a completely new eye exam, which I am not due for and have no desire to pay for as it would negate the savings from switching back to the cheaper lenses.)
I am not loyal to any one online contact store. Over the years, I have ordered from Coastal Contacts, Vision Direct, Opticontacts, Contact Lens King, AC Lens, and who knows who else. (Not 1800CONTACTS, because despite their lowest price guarantee, they are by far the most expensive. Allegedly they price match, but why go through that hassle when I can just order from the cheaper place in the first place?) So today I started doing price comparisons. The going rate is just shy of $30 per box. Grrr. Gotta pay it, because I sure as heck am not going back to my horrible glasses that give me headaches (despite the prescription being verified twice) and make me look like a man. And, though I mentioned it at the beginning of this entry, I'm afraid of the laser.
Okay, so, prescription info entered. Billing info entered. Total of...ummmm, what the heck? Why does the total not equal the per box price times quanitity? Sales tax is listed as zero, and the large banner at the top of the page advertises free shipping over $50, which I definitely have. Let's read the fine print. Aha! A handling charge of $7.95 has been added to my order, spread evenly between each box of lenses and built into the subtotal. How sneaky! Cancel, cancel, cancel. Not spending my money somwhere that would pull that stunt. Next provider. Same deal, handling fee. Somewhat to their credit, it is itemized separately, however, it doesn't appear until after all the billing info, etc has been entered. Next provider. Handling fee. Next provider. Handling fee. This is getting ridiculous. Just make the already overpriced lenses even more overpriced to begin with and call it done. Grrr. Time for a new google search. "Contact lenses no handling fee." Aha! ContactLens.com. Right on the homepage-"we never charge a Handling Fee." Excellent. But what's the catch? They will have taken my previous advice and jacked up the initial price, I'm sure. But no! $28.25 per box. Period. End of story. No other fees of any kind. :) Congratulations, you win my business, contactlens.com. :)
Hey, you think that rant was long? If I ever start in on insurance comapanies and how I feel about getting a rate from them, run, don't walk as fast as you can in the other direction, or you will be here a very, very long time.
