The very lovely
Chris just reminded me that in celebration of
V-Day, which is "a global movement to stop violence against women and girls", there's a production of
the Vagina Monologues going on at UBC. She'll be wowing with her cello prowess, and the rest of the cast is, by all accounts, stupendous.
Show runs February 5th-7th; tickets are $12/$16. Facebook event/info
here.
Our beneficiaries this year are:
VDay's Congo Spotlight: VDay's new global campaign to call attention to the wide-scale atrocities committed against women and girls in Eastern DRC and demand an end to the impunity with which these crimes are committed. The Campaign is being initiated by V-Day and UNICEF, representing UN Action Against Sexual Violence in Conflict.
The Sexual Assault Support Centre on Campus (SASC): The SASC is located on the main floor of the SUB across from MacInnes Field. They provide female, male, and trans survivors of sexual assault, as well as their friends, family members, and partners, with caring, non-judgmental emotional, medical, and legal support, as well as information about options. All of their services are FREE and CONFIDENTIAL. Volunteer opportunities are also available.
Women Against Violence Against Women (WAVAW): WAVAW is a non-profit organization that has been providing sexual assault support services to women 14 years of age and older, in Greater Vancouver for 23 years. They are open and accessible to all women survivors of violence. They operate within a feminist and anti-oppression framework, and are committed to non-violence.
Vancouver Coastal Health's Transyouth Program: The Transgender Health Program was launched by Vancouver Coastal Health in June 2003 to bring together transgender people and loved ones, health care providers, health planners, and researchers to work on improving transgender health services in BC. They welcome anyone who has a transgender health question or concern. Their services are free, anonymous, and confidential.
