I hope your post was cathartic for you, because it was for me.
I was going to relate my coping mechanisms for snotty babies and sleep, but I don't think I'm adding anything more useful to the conversation, except a hearty second to the comments previously posted.
Caleb aspirated meconium fluid when he was born, and for the first several months he had an icky-sounding rattle and was always, always, always snotty. Copious amounts of fluid lurking in that little nasal cavity. I don't know if the snottiness was medically related to the meconium thing or not, but it has always been related in my mind.
ANYWAY, we got a lot of use out of our nasal aspirator (we call it the Snot Sucker) and saline drops. We were blessed with a great doctor - laid back, but also a very thorough diagnostician. Didn't have to worry that he was so laid back he'd miss something. He's gone now...that's another story.
I hope you find a good doctor. It sounds to me like your (former) pediatrician is suffering from holier-than-thouness, as well as a probable case of cover-my-assitis. I'm sure she's scared shitless of malpractice suits.
