As to the ending of the story, you would be correct Mrs.Puckerman was most upset about having to hear second hand that her son was in a relationship. The reason that Puck brought up that he she didn't approve of Sam was more of a 'why I didn't want to tell you' versus a 'I know this is why you're mad' statement. Puck knows that his mother wouldn't approve of Sam for many reasons, he's a man, he's not jewish, etc., but Puck (and I) believe that she'll come around. He wants to have an honest conversation with her for once, she's not ready (that's pretty much the gist of the ending).
I'm glad that you liked that part, I really wanted to give Puck and Sam those nice clean lines that define what's happening in their relationship at the end because that was really (along with Puck's personal stuff) the whole point of the story, so it's very nice to hear that it was appreciated!
