Tutorial 002: Rounded Rectangle in GIMP

Learn how to make this icon in GIMP:

The basic focus of this tutorial will be how to make the rounded rectangle.

1. I crop and resize the original picture.

2. I sharpen it (Filters > Enhance > Sharpen), with the setting at 20.

3. I duplicate the layer I've been working on and set it to Soft Light.

4. I take a default GIMP gradient (Blue Green), apply it, and set it to Soft Light.

5. I duplicate my first Soft Light layer (the one with the picture) and move it on top of the gradient layer. I set this duplicated layer to Multiply.

6. Now for the rectangle part. Make a new layer. Then select the Rectangle Select tool. Use it to make a rectangular selection somewhere on the picture, where you want your rounded rectangle to be. Make it the size you want your rounded rectangle. Make sure the "Feather Edges" setting is on 0.

7. Click Select > Rounded Rectangle. The Radius % should be about 50. Click OK.

8. Your selection is a rounded rectangle! Fill it with black or whatever color you like.

9. Add text, decoration, texture, whatever. I added another rounded rectangle (smaller and a little less round), filled it with white, and added text in black and white.

This technique can also be used to make rounded corners on your icon (you don't have to select anything, just make a new layer, click Select > Rounded Rectangle, invert the selection, and fill it with white or whatever.

You can change the Radius % at the Rounded Rectangle box to differ the shape of your rounded rectangle (i.e. how "rounded" it is.)
