Birdie Mae.......

She did a really good job.  I didn't even notice the nest in the planter by the front door until it was completely finished.  Then when I peeked inside, the four little eggs were already there.

The next time I checked the nest, the Carolina wren was inside, sitting on her eggs.  I decided to call her Birdie Mae.

You are such a menagerie magnet! Maybe the bird showed up to ease the loss of poor Ginger. We have a bird that nests high up on top of some outdoor speakers on our porch every year--well out of reach of any critters. (Good thing, as I found a snake on the porch floor once.) Can you perhaps use any of your sq. foot garden support buckets weighted with something (sand/bricks, etc.) and then stacked up to get the pot up at least a bit higher out of cat range, or would they just leap up at it anyway? It wouldn't be the most stylish plant stand, but you might save their little lives, and it would certainly be a conversation piece. :-)

BTW,in case you didn't know it, you can snip off jade plant tips and stick them into the pot dirt and they will root; then trim down the leggy bare stem and it will send out new leaves, making a more compact plant. I usually dip the stem ends into some rooting hormone before sticking them into the dirt, but I don't think you have to. A Peperomia I have roots the same way. Rooting hormone comes in a little jar at Home Depot/Lowe's, etc. --VA pal
