Back when I used LJ all the time, I had purchased add-on userpic space. That expired eons ago. Now there are a bunch that are "inactive" but still uploaded, so they're still on old posts. It doesn't look like I can choose which ones are "active", though, and some of the ones that are, I won't want to use. I could delete a bunch, but that would take
