Academy Awards 2006

My two cents on this year's Oscars:

Jon Stewart was fair as the host, I thought - I did crack up over his joke about Bjork and Dick Cheney (which is funniest to those who remember the year she wore the infamous "swan dress"). And I liked the fact that he was funny without being insulting to anyone (last year's host, please take note.) But I could have done without the "Oscar Attack Ads". The first few were amusing, but after that it just got tedious. And whoever thought it would be funny to have Ben Stiller presenting in a "green screen" unitard - No. Just... No.

No surprises in the acting, writing, or directing categories. I thought Reese Witherspoon's acceptance speech was quite charming - I think I'm going to have to rent "Walk the Line" when it comes out (maybe it's out already?)

I *was* a little surprised by the Cinematography award. I thought that "Geisha" was good, but "Brokeback" was better.

And I rather strongly disagree with the Best Picture award. I liked "Crash" better than some of my friends did, but I do *not* think that it was the best film of the year.

I'll be curious to see how the Awards did in the ratings, given that very few of the nominees were big hits at the box office. I actually saw all five of the Best Picture nominees, all five up for best direction, directing nominees, all ten of the nominees for screenwriting (original and adapted), and nine of the fifteen films with acting nominations. (I missed "Walk the Line", “Hustle & Flow”, “A History of Violence”, “Transamerica”, “North Country”, and "Junebug"). But I think I'm one of very few people who did so.
