Belated 722th Birthday, Switzerland!

Aug 04, 2013 21:51

Ok, strictly speaking, it was your 198th birthday on 1st August. Well, 165th, but let's not be nitpicky here; oldest democracy in Europe blablabla whatever. Anyway, after entertaining you with battle cows last year, I have something special for you today, and it fits that I post it late, because it's the old Swiss national anthem, the one used before 1984 and still stubbornly used by older people like me who never accepted the new (written in 1841) one.

So why did Switzerland change its old anthem in the first place, you ask?

WE WERE BULLIED INTO CHANGING IT! BULLIED, I TELL YOU!

And who was the mean old bully? Well, have a wild guess!

Bitter, me? Naw... just remember next time who had it first. Your anthem is recycled, nyah nyah nyah! :P***

***It's not, of course. But it's a great story to confuse expats!
