It's a very short clip, and not that spoilery itself, but I have a theory (also regarding Norrington) ...

My problem is that I've seen a spoiler script, which has the whole story.

Of course, I have no proof that the film will actually be like the script I've seen, though none of the spoilers have contradicted it yet, but *if* the script is accurate, then we are looking at an ignominious death for James about half way through, (while letting Elizabeth go) with no one really noticing he's gone afterwards and events proceeding to a big EIC/Pirate battle which is eventually decided by the fate of the Dutchman. (No Naval prescence.)

I very much prefer the idea that he's not really dead and that the Navy will come along to arrest both damn sides! That would certainly make me squee :) But I'm doing my typical thing of expecting the worst, so that if it doesn't happen I can be pleasantly surprised, rather than expecting the best and being disappointed.

I think you're spot on with your speculation about Jack though. I read somewhere that he was a merchant Captain who refused to co-operate with Beckett in the slave trade and was branded as a result. So yes, if Beckett genuinely doesn't recognise him it can only be because he's changed so much.

You have NO idea how happy that would make me! :-D That's a fic which has to be written one day! *hintherearepenandpaper*

I don't think Norrington will return with a ship of the Royal Navy under his feet, but I am very much in denial do believe in the "unexpected return of James Norrington".

About that script: over the last months I have learned various surprising things about the way POTC is marketed; the studios are looking at the fandom closer than we think and in ways I've so far only experienced once (SG-1).

To be quite honest: I think we're being played with. Not just one fraction of the fandom, but all of us fans. Be it "Will is going to die" or "Keira doesn't want to do movie 4" or "Norrington dies" - I'll believe it when I see it.

I agree. Though I have to say that having been through the machine in the same way before DMC, pretty much everything that got leaked then was accurate. There was a lot of *wildly* inaccurate speculation, but most of the spoiler material itself turned out to be there in the film.

But having said that, my reaction to being played with is to say 'fuck you!' and raise a finger in their general direction. If they *wanted* to create widespread depression and dissatisfaction, they're having great success :) For my own part, however, I honestly don't care. Whether Norrington dies or not is nothing to me. I've drawn a line under CotBP and decided that *that's* what I'm a fan of. As far as the sequels go, I honestly don't care.

I'm interested to know what happens, of course, but only in the way you sometimes check the end of a truly dreadful book, which you stopped reading in the middle, to find out how the story ended. Their publicity machine has sufficiently succeeded in alienating me completely, otherwise ;)

In other words: I'll have to take a bottle of Blue Sapphire Bombay gin with me to the cinema, otherwise I will not live to see the end...

*sniff*

I'm with you regarding the publicity, but then my "POTC" trilogy is "CotBP", "Fanfiction" and "Fanart". I had fun with the second movie, but it was more looking a separate movie than a sequel. CotBP is a standalone, as far as I'm concerned. I'm looking forward to AWE, but if I see one more promo picture of Keira Knightly, I might read a book during her scenes (not her fault, but that's the worst case of overhyping I've ever encountered in a movie...)

Where is everyone seeing these pictures? I've heard similar complaints all over fandom, but I haven't seen any of these promo pictures myself. Not that I'm complaining! I'm sure I'm a lot happier that way :)

I'm not on any communities but the ones where I post my fanfic, but sometimes I do "f-list hopping", plus there are the movie-websites I visit, and it's aaaaaall about Elizabeth. It doesn't look like a fan-made phenomenon, rather than some strategy from the studios. I don't really care, but I'd think that Jack Sparrow was of a wee bit more importance than Elizabeth - I have yet to meet somebody who says "oh, can't wait to see Elizabeth".

That icon is making a good statement! :-D
