Well, if they really mean to tell us that POTC is a world in which a man like Norrington no longer has a place, I´d say he´s better off dead - and this fandom will be better off without me (since I´ll be off to write AU fic...). But the more they try to hit me over the head with his death, the less I believe it - I´m weird like that... As I´ve been saying for two years now, I´ll not give up on him (being a goody and alive) until the credits are through and the lights go on. :)
As for Groves, I guess Beckett just took over *everything* - but I doubt he´ll have much fun with a pirate fanboy like dear Theodore... ;)
The thought of Jamie having to suffer a branding makes me cringe, too, but I´d still chose it over him being dead... They could mirror the dock scene in COTBP when Sparrow checks back on *him*, it would explain why James could all of a sudden believe him, and the image of a pirate branding hidden under a navy uniform once the movie is over (for I too want him back there) is just *too* tempting an image for the "piracy can happen to anyone" shades of grey message...
But I´ll second what others have said: As long as he survives...! SH

Agreed. I feel the same way (as you can probably tell, hehe!) The fandom (at least the little corner I'm playing in) has already brought James to safety. The outcome of the movies will have little influence on our perception of Norrington, I guess. Whether they kill him or make him King Of Jamaica - it won't change the way I see or write him.
Norrington has always been the middle-ground between the two extremes - the pirates and the greedy gits of the EITC. It would be very "undisneyish" to kill him off - and very stupid at that if they plan more sequels. That's also why I think Cutler Beckett will survive - he's too good a villain to kill him off.
