Actually, there was something semi-official on Jack's history with the EIC on the website just before DMC got out, in one of the games.

Supposedly, Jack got an order to transfer slaves on a ship called (something, can't remember), and refused. So Beckett had him sunk. Then, Jack had Davey Jones "ressurect" the ship and renamed her Black Pearl.

So your theory on that is pretty close.

But James said that one chapter behind to Gibbs.

(though I'm hoping you're right about his surprise ending, I'm certainly hanging my hopes on that)

I'm not a gamer, so I didn't know that, but yay, I guessed right then! :)

But James said that one chapter behind to Gibbs.

Yes - but he says "one chapter behind yours" - yours can be "yours, Gibbs" or a general "yours, you bloody lot". Norrington knew Jack Sparrow before they first met. He had heard of him. I always took that chapter-remark as a general "you pirates" rather than "you, Gibbs".

I might think too complicated, but Gibbs seems to be some link between Sparrow and Norrington. He used to be in the navy, after all - there must have been a reason why he left (or was kicked out) and joined Sparrow's crew.

As I mentioned in a comment above, we shouldn't completely dismiss the possibility that Norrington will end up where he started: in the Royal Navy.

I'm happy with just about anything, as long as it involves Norrington, y'know, LIVING. But yeah, i had the similar hope with the desceneding, posted about it too. I just hope that's not simply an "easy kid-book phrasing."

I just can't believe that Disney would give out such a huge spoiler over a month before the opening of the movie. That's why I take the content of that book with a huge grain of salt - there's a reason the "adult" version won't be released but a day before the movie.

I'm in denial. Did you notice?

*nods* I do agree. And I KNOW the ending isn't out anywhere. So yeah, I'm with you in denial. Only I prefer to call it "ridiculously optimistic hope"
