Tintin and Snowy to hit the big screen

I really wish they'd just leave my childhood heros alone. I'm still recovering from the Astérix-movies, and now they come along with plans to drag poor Tintin and Snowy on the big screen.

Tintin et Milou or, as I know them, Tim und Struppi, will hit cinemas for Christmas 2008. I found the following article while looking for Basil Brush doing research for one of my fics. I still find the thought of a Tintin real-action movie cringworthy, but I had to laugh out loud when I read the casting suggestions! Can I suggest Conan O'Brien, please? :-D

BRUSSELS - 2007 is the year of Tintin - or rather Hergé, the father of the adventurous young journalist, his loyal dog Snowy and quick-tempered Captain Haddock. Filmed by DreamWorks, the movie promises to be one of the major box-office hits in 2008.

Filming hasn't started yet, but the Steven Spielberg-produced movie already keeps the grape vine buzzing with casting rumors.

"I know that the fans will watch every step we take very carefully." Spielberg said during a recent press-conference at the prestigious Peyo Hotel in Brussels. "They expect a move that will live up to the legendary status of Tintin, and that's exactly what they will get."

Insiders say that it's very likely two-time Academy Award®-winning actor Tom Hanks will play Captain Haddock and shake the screen with colorful expletives such as "Ten thousand thundering typhoons". Rumors have it that that William H. Macy has been casted as Professor Cuthbert Calculus. But the questions fans all over the world really want to have answered is: who will bring Tintin alive on the big screen?

Let's have a look at rumored candidates:

Jamie Bell, star of "Billy Elliott" and "King Kong": good choice, but not very likely, as the British actor has signed up for two movie projects in 2008, among them "Jumper" after a novel by Steven Gould.

Young French actor Gaspard Ulliel of "Hannibal Rising" fame has also been mentioned.

Ewan McGregor would be an interesting choice, but the "Trainspotting" star is very likely too old for the part.

Also-run is Irish actor Damien O'Hare, who has gained underground stardom as pirate "Gillette" in blockbuster "Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl". Billions and billions of bilious blue blistering barnacles!"

However, the director of classics like "ET" and the "Indiana Jones" trilogy kept tight-lipped when asked about possible candidates for a casting.

"Nothing is set in stone yet, but it's very likely that Snowy will be played by a dog," a good humored Spielberg joked. - jsj

"Pirate"? WTF?
