Meta: Plagiarism and Generation Me!Me!Me!

Houston, we have a plagiarism-scandal. This time in Germany, and the culprit is a 17-year old called Helene Hegemann. Critics whipped out the thesaurus and showered her book "Axolotl Roadkill" with praise, rolling in superlatives like pigs in mud.  That's not unusual; critics love wunderkinder. I have no doubts that there are 17 year olds who write ( Read more... )

My thoughts as well. If you want to really boggle your mind, read Bimo's reply below, where she quotes the "statement" of Spiegel Online. It beggars belief! "So she copied - so what? Other's done it before!"

Oh boy. I'd pay good money to hear Marcel Reich's comment...

Oh dear. Not the FAZ as well - I think I'll just avoid German press for the next couple of months. Let's make a bet how long it will take for the case to turn up on Stern TV...! (Jauch would have a field day with this!)

I can't believe it! Aren't these the very same people who predict doom and end of civilisation as we know it due to copyright infringment and piracy? If I'd take a page from Daniel Haas' book and include it into one of mine, without his consent and without even mentioning him (would be fun, though - pseudo-intellectual yadda yadda in an 18th century setting. Sebastian would have fun with it.), wouldn't Ullstein run to its lawyers immediately? But nooo, if one of their authors helps herself to the bar, that's fine.

I'm cringing here with second-hand embarrassment, reading some of those articles and comments. So far, "Zeit" is the only one who makes some sort of sense. Spiegel and FAZ? Jokes. I hope everybody involved in this pathetic debacle will be mocked without mercy. This is really on the level of fanficrants...

my mama taught me to read FAZ "to know what the enemy thinks"!

Hahaha! That's what my father says about Weltwoche. I just assume that the enemy exists WITHOUT reading it, though - much better for my bloodpressure! :-D
