Onto a new time period for me....MAYBE

Feb 19, 2015 14:05

It is ages since I last posted anything here and I promise two new postings will be forthcoming very shortly, but today I am more in the mood to muse a little bit about a potential new time period that I have yet to really explore. It is "modern" compared to most of the things that I do and in fact this time I will likely go more for a "look" than full accuracy. The inspiration for this new adventure is this pattern:

I basically fell in love with the yellow ski jacket.. just love the asymmetrical detail of the closure and "bombershell" styling.

Now I do not really want to go skiing as that time is somewhat past for my life but I would like something to wear in everyday life that I both like and feel comfortable in ie what was known in previous lives as sporting clothes. Except for the fact that trousers of that time were quite wide legged, nothing she is wearing would be unusual for the streets of today. Even the wide legged trousers were a very common back style in the mid 80s, right down to and including the pant cuff, "pleated" front and high waist (although the waist in the 30s is somewhat higher than was seen in the 80s and pleats were very close to the waistline where in the 30s they extend much further down the front). Retro dressing as part of the modern panorama of clothing styles can easily accommodate this particular outfit and I would expect that more people would guess this outfit as 80s than 30s... really retro!

This one image then set me off looking to see what could be found for patterns that I might then adjust to suit what I have in my head. The trousers were the easiest find curtsey of "Wearing History" pattern Smooth Sailing

The jacket has been more of a challenge and not as successful as I would have hoped. I expect there will have to be some drafting changes to make the front closure asymmetrical

I did find a couple of jackets that I really like the look of to help me along in creating this jacket. Now I need to decide on whether I want the jacket to stop at the waist, or create a slighter longer waist so that I can add the lovely waist detail at the back of the second jacket.

What should I put under the jacket was my only remaining consideration but that was pretty easily answered. For some time now I have been thinking about do a little knitting, an activity I used to do a lot back in the 1980s and so knitting a sweater seemed the obvious solution for the final item in this outfit.

Both of these patterns are straight forward to create but I am leaning slightly more towards the "stripped" sweater and adding a scarf to the final look. So I have ordered the pants pattern and downloaded the stripped sweater pattern.. onto project

So a new adventure with a date for completion perhaps for my nephews wedding in late June or perhaps for early next fall.
