The nice thing about a maker fair is that is provides a bridge between the artsy-crafsty folks and the techy-tinkery folks. Used to be this was a pretty sharp divide, but there is a growing realization that creativity is where you find it, and making stuff is making stuff. There's a ways to go yet, of course; it was obvious that the gender divide is still alive and well--pretty much all the artsy-craftsy types were chicks and all the techy-tinkery types were dudes. I did my best to bridge the gap by wearing my R2D2 hat.
Z was unsure what to make of the robots, and spent most of his time in the math puzzle tent. My favorite thing was the Feltronics table, where they were demoing a large-scale set of circuitry components mounted on felt, with magnetic bits on the ends to complete circuits. Homeschooling mom is all a-quiver. I must have a set! (Maybe I can make a set? Maybe Aaron, Z, and I can make a set together? Ooooh!) (Looking at the
website, it seems you must make a set--this is a how-to, not a retail product. Even better!) (Wouldn't this be cool as wearable art-tech? Interactive t-shirts!)
