Going Solo

I tried, I really tried. I got myself all dolled up for the dance Thursday night in Oakhurst, and went determined to dance my little patootie off. Usually when I feel lukwarm about dancing, the music gets me moving, and Thursday's dance featured a New Orleans jazz band I hadn't heard before, so I was pretty sure that would be the impetus I needed to get off said patootie and dance.

A bit, a bit. But...not so much. I did have some really nice dances with leads I hadn't seen for a while, and that was a good thing. The problem was the number I sat out, holding up the wall while pretending to listen to the band and watch the dance floor. It's curiously stressful, the constant prick of "will I have a partner for this next one?" I'm just tired of it.

So, the heck with it. I'm hereby taking a sabbatical from partner dancing. I'm going to focus instead on the performance class I've been taking with Down South Swing, solo dancing, and picking up some tap.

I've never much been interested in tap dance before, but as a swing-related solo genre, I figure it might be good to give it a try. Rachel has been talking about taking a tap class together since last year, and we've never managed to get the schedules worked out. This month we started a series of Saturday tap workshops, and I'm going to take it as a good omen that the class started with the Shim Sham. :) (The fact that I scored brand new patent leather Capezios at the thrift store a few months ago doesn't hurt, either.)
