We watch a lot of Blue's Clues in this house. It's one of Z's favorite shows, and he asks for it by name, by making the finger flick gesture the host makes when he sings the theme song. It's a good show--in addition to the usual preschool stuff like shapes, colors, etc, it teaches empathy and problem-solving, and what's not to like about that?
The thing is, we always watch our TV either on DVDs or streamed off the internet, so the fact that Blue's Clues is not exactly a current show had pretty much escaped us. We were aware of the Steve vs Joe debates online, but didn't have the experience of dozens of Steve episodes being replaced by Joe episodes (nor has Z expressed a preference, or, possibly, even noticed). As far as we're concerned, all Blue's Clues episodes occur more or less simultaneously, in a time that is always the present (much like toddlers think, come to think of it).
But of course, while we'd been aware of the existence of the little blue puppy and his green- (or orange-) shirted friend, until we had a toddler of our own, we weren't really up on the intricacies of the show. (Now that we do have a toddler, we get videos like
Cthulhu's Clues a lot better.) So when Aaron told me he'd made a Blue's Clues reference in his lecture one day, I was concerned his student's wouldn't get the joke. "If they don't have toddlers, will they know what that is?" Aaron replied, "Honey, they watched it when they were toddlers."
Blues Clues premiered in 1996.
Aaron's students were born in the 90s?? Oh my god, we're old.
