Secret Ingredient

blyssmouse's Iron Chef theme birthday party was a rousing success. Though I missed the appetizer round, the hot hors d'oeuvres and dessert rounds provided plenty of yummy food to thoroughly stuff me full (especially since I was judging the dessert round--yum!).

Since I'm not really what my hat says I am, I decided not to compete, but to bring along a dish in keeping with the theme. For those of you who couldn't attend, I provide you here with a home version of "guess the secret ingredient:"

Though I’m in this cake, I’m not very sweet,
Which is probably why I'm not in the candy that bears my name.
I come from the land of beer and brats,
And the home of the Braves names a neighborhood for what I'm made of.
I can fight scurvy, hangovers, and even cancer,
But my strong aroma may make me less than welcome.

2 cup(s) all-purpose flour
1 1/3 cup(s) sugar
1 1/2 tsp baking soda
2/3 cup(s) unsweetened cocoa
1/2 cup(s) butter, melted

In a large mixing bowl or in the bowl of an electric mixer, combine flour, sugar, baking soda and 2/3 cup of cocoa. Add melted butter, hot water and vanilla extract; mix well. Add sauerkraut and blend thoroughly.

Pour batter into prepared pan; bake in center of oven until a tester inserted in center of cake comes out clean, about 55 to 60 minutes.

Cool cake in pan for about 20 minutes and then turn out onto a baking rack to cool completely. Sprinkle with powdered sugar before slicing into 14 pieces.
