Shopping, Ironwork, and Pirates

Aug 18, 2006 21:07

While Aaron stayed at the hotel to meet with his students, Alice and I took a leisurely walk through some of the squares of Savannah, shopping and photographing fancy ironwork. (Well, mainly I took pictures, Alice waited patiently on benches.) It only rained for about 15 minutes in the middle of the afternoon! Yay!

Later we met Aaron back at the hotel and walked over to a toystore called Blackbeard's Booty to start the pirate tour. Our tour guide was Mary Read, one of history's few female pirates. She told us stories of her comrades Anne Bonny and Calico Jack Rackham, and some of Savannah's other notorious ne'er-do-wells of the high seas. This was a great success largely due to the fact that she told most of her stories in one or another of Savannah's shady squares, where there are benches. I love walking tours, but it was nice to sit down!

Beach tomorrow! Here's to clear skies!
