I'm so sorry, Joy, I'm obviously going through my opinionated phase. Michael Messmore's name fits his books - he made more of a mess of Alexander and Ancient Macedon than any author I know. His Hephaestion is a clot and the rest of his characters have no personality. And his research for his books must have been minimal. He wrote one mainly about Philip and Olympias and one about Alexander - Alexander the King or something like that. Didn't bother to read the first one and skimmed the second. He lets us understand Alexander and Hephaestion are lovers but doesn't seem happy about it - they never actually seem to spend the night together - and has his Alexander comparing the male and female body and - THIS IS ANCIENT GREECE! - finding the female body superior, because men have no curves. Then he has him refering to himself as "more and more hetrosexual" (yes he uses that term!) and being PLEASED about it. He says he loved Hephaestion but doesn't know why because Hephaestion was so stupid. If someone held a gun to my head and ( ... )

"he has him referring himself as more and more HETEROSEXUAL"...
WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT??? my god, I thought to have already read every kind of crap but...I missed this! And Alexander finding the female body superior, because men have no curves...what is this, a book from a frustrated old man? **disgusting**
Ah, well, he says Alexander loves Hephaestion but doesn't know why because he is so stupid...well, I'm wondering too how Alexander could have loved a stupid man for twenty years :P My God, how can thee people get published. What a waste of paper. And Nicastro's book seems even worse...a rapist and impotent Alexander. Every time I read these things I think they're insulting Alexander (and Hephaestion).
But...no need to apologize, dear, I knew this rant is not aimed at me ;) we could talk about these books again...:)
**hug** (to you and Joy)

Yes, how did that 1st person narrator know? Camp gossip at best, rather unreliable!
Exactly as you say it's ancient Greece; with Alexander's education, background, and his love of the Iliad with Achilles and Patroclus it's really strange to think he could think a woman's curves "superior" and being pleased to find himself more and more a lady's man! Even if he did secretly "find out" he liked being with women more, I don't think he would've been happy about it, given the thoughts on love between a man and a woman, and love between two men, of the time ( ... )

Hello again!

Well, as long as you don't mind this, my dear, just a quick note:

For anyone who hates buying an ATG novel and finding out Hephaestion is either a thickwit, an effeminate fawning "pouf", or just some bloke who hangs about in the background playing second fiddle to a Mary Sue, these are the best Hephaestion-oriented ATG novels to date. Anyone who wants more info just email me on luminh71@yahoo.co.uk - I think I've spammed Joy's story enough:

A CONSPIRACY OF WOMEN by Aubrey Menen
A CHOICE OF DESTINIES by Melissa Scott
LORD OF THE TWO LANDS by Judith Tarr
THE VIRTUES OF WAR by Stephen Pressfield
THE YOUNG ALEXANDER THE GREAT by Naomi Mitchison

sorry!! my computer is acting up!!!

LAST TWO:

ALEXANDER IN BABYLON by Jakob Wassermann
ALEXANDER: A NOVEL OF UTOPIA by Klaus Mann

Finally! Sorry, my dear Joy, for the messy posting!!! I'd be wary of the last two - they're not a walk in the park, but they do have some beautiful, haunting scenes and intelligent writing. (If anyone's interested, "Utopia" is the one with a Cleitus-Hephaestion-Alexander love triangle, but no-one get excited, it's not in the order you strange fans of Cleitus / Hephaestion might like!

Now I really will shut up.

Parisad, I completely understand about people being upset with non-historical or close-minded perspectives in historical work, especially regarding major things like the Theban Sacred Band. I guess (and this is just me of course) I'm willing to forgive much - very much, if characterization strikes true to me, especially in regard to Hephaestion in the AtG world, what with so many works depicting him as neglected/jealous (of a eunuch or a woman?!)/doggedly loyal, and the list goes on.

Thank you for reading, it means a lot that you like it since I know you are one of the AtG history gurus. ^_________^
