What seemed to have turned into days, turned into months and months turned into years. Well, not technically. In reality, it was just two days in which Arizona has left for good. Two days in which Callie realized that she had the opportunity to start all over again with Arizona but instead she let her fears get to the best of her and asked Laura to marry her. She told Arizona that she wished Arizona to leave her alone, and Arizona listened. For Callie, it did feel like years but she realized that she had to get back to work and stop thinking about her. About the love of her life who she will never see again. Callie, Derek, Bailey, Teddy, and the chief had to work as a group with this patient because they are critically ill. It was an airplane crash that happened and the people who were able to survive went to Mass Gen but since this patient was critically ill for the last two days, they needed the best doctors they can get. Apparently, when the airplane hit, it fell hard and this patient was not in the seat at the moment which caused him/her to get seriously injured.
"When is the patient coming in" asked Chief Webber.
"Any moment sir. Apparently, her wounds are severe that they needed to be extra careful with her. Shepherd, you will have to check the epidural hematoma because although the doctors at Mass Gen checked it, and fixed it, they manage to be coming back slowly. You'll have to see if you can fix it by finding the main source. Torres, you have to check the spine and her bones. They broke their arm, leg but the one that is more urgent is the spine. The patients spinal cord might be damaged and they might lose the ability to walk. You have to make sure that does not happen or do your best. Teddy, You will be monitoring the heart and see if there will be no complications during the surgery. Now that we know who is doing what. I think that Shephard should go first because the head injury is really serious and while he is fixing the hematoma, Torres, you will be fixing the arm and leg. Then when Shephard is finished, we could move on to their spinal cord injury. We cannot be working with this patient all at once. So do we got it." Was all Bailey said.
"Yes Bailey, we got it." everybody answered.
It just took the ambulance a few seconds to arrive to have the team assembled and ready to go. They had to move quick but at the same time safely so they do not injure the patient.
"So what do we got" asked Bailey
"Its a 34 year old female. She goes by the name of Arizona Robbins and we transferred her here from Mass Gen. We had to stabilize her in the ambulance because she flatlined. She has been like this for the last two days. I'm pretty surprised that she made it this far. I just gave her a couple of hours when I picked her up. She was a mess. Doctor -"
Bailey was shocked. She was the first one in getting to the ambulance. Dr. Shepherd was behind since he had to order an OR room and get ready as well as Torres. She was interrupted when a paramedic was calling out to her. "Thanks. We got it." Once she actually saw Arizona, she was shocked, Her knees felt wobbly and at the same time, she wanted to cry. Granted, Bailey found Arizona a little annoying with her personality but she grew on Bailey. Arizona loved to talk, and was always showing her super magic smile to everybody. To now see her laying on that gurney fighting for her life which was laying on a thread. Soon, she remembered that Callie was going to be here any second and when she sees her, Bailey doesn't know how she is going to react. She was going to tell Callie to come later, but it was already too late. Shepherd and Torres were already out and heading towards the patient.
"So this is the patient. Lets take a ---uh" gasps Derek. He couldn't believe what he just saw. He was ready to go. He felt prepared to take the patient into surgery but once he saw who it was, he felt like the air was taken away from him.
"Derek whats wrong." Torres asked now realizing yet who the patient was. "Derek, if we don't take, OMG no, no no. This can't be. Bailey tell me its not Arizona. She wa-was in an airplane heading off to her new life and God no, she, no she is not here, she is --"
"Torres, focus, we have to get her in surgery or else she could suffer severe damages. Lets GO now. She depends on this surgery. We don't have time to lose." Bailey demanded knowing that if she didn't pull out of it, she would be like Callie right now, shocked, numb, not knowing what to do. Callie took her advice and went with Shepherd who seemed to have everything in control right now but could tell that he was also feeling all sorts of emotions right now.
A couple of hours passed, and Callie already put Arizona's arm and leg in a cast and she was immediately taken out of the OR. Bailey allowed her to go the the OR Gallery to look at the operation but couldn't stay in the OR itself. The surgery was going okay. Derek was able to stabilize the epidural hematoma, but soon after he was about to close up, it started to bleed again. 'Shepherd, this is not a good sign. If she keeps on losing blood like this, she could go into a coma, die or suffer sever brain injuries." Bailey asked concerned. "Bailey I know what can happen, but this bleeding won't stop. I am going to have to go in deeper to find the source and then oh hell no, not right now Arizona. Please Arizona don't do this! Not right now! Get me the paddles, charged them to 360! Stand Back!" Derek was screaming and electrifying Arizona a couple of times already. Callie was watching and she was crying. "Arizona, please don't go." Callie realized that instead of being in the gallery, she should go to the OR room and hold Arizona.
"Torres, you can't be in here." Bailey said.
"Bailey, its fine. Callie can come in. She has to say goodbye. Arizona is gone now. I tried to do everything but I just couldn't."
"Derek, No! You're joking. You're lying! She is not dead. She can't be." Callie immediately went to where Arizona was laying down and grabbed her hand. "Arizona, you can't leave. Please come back. I love you. I was a fool in pushing you away. I didn't get married to Laura. Well I did say yes, but Laura saw that it wasn't her that I was in love with its you. You are the love of my life. The person that I want to spend the rest of my life with. Grow old with you. What am I supposed to do without you. You're my everything. I want to wake up to you every day and see you smiling at me. Part of me died when you left Arizona, IF you leave me I will surely die. Thats why you can't leave me. I need you by my side until we get old." Callie was crying and Bailey was not a woman to cry but she had tears coming out of her to see how Callie loved Arizona. She knew that if Arizona died, Callie would not be the same. "Shepherd, please try resuscitating Arizona again please."
"Bailey, I can't. She is..."
"Please" Bailey asked.
"OK. Torres, Can you let go of her arm right now. I am going to try to resuscitate her again. Ready bailey. charge it to 360. (shock). Again (shock). She is still flatlining. One more time. (shock). Beep, Beep, Beep. Derek was surprised but thrilled at the same time. "Okay Dr. Torres, I need you to go back to the gallery and wait until I finish." Callie obeyed and decided to leave. On her way back to the gallery she saw Mark, Lexie, Meredith, Cristina and Alex.
"Whats wrong with you?" Cristina asked. Apparently, nobody has heard that Arizona was in the OR fighting for her life.
"Didn't you hear?" was all Callie could manage to say.
"No. Whats going on." Cristina asked now more intrigued.
"Its Arizona."
"Well, did blondie show up again after leaving again. I got to say that nerve of her leaving and coming." Mark and Cristina said.
"She did come back but not the way you guys think. She was in the airplane going to god knows where, and there was a plane crash. She was on that airplane and she was out of her seat, so when the airplane crashed, she took the fatal injuries. She was at Mass Gen, but she was transferred here because we have great doctors here and just a couple of seconds ago. she flatline for a good five minutes. Derek is operating her still but I think he is almost done. Now if you excuse me, I am headed to the gallery."
They were all speechless. They were still processing after they heard Arizona, plane, crash. They couldn't believe it. They couldn't believe that it was Arizona. Why her? Yeah she did hurt Callie when she left, but still they grew up to love AZ and Cristina also. They decided to head to the gallery when Derek came out.
"Derek, how did the surgery go?" Callie asked.
"You might want to sit down, Torres." Callie obeys and knows that something bad happened if Derek is telling her to sit down.
"Derek, whats wrong? How's Arizona Did she-"
"No, Arizona did not die. She is still living, but she is critically ill. We were able to stop the hematoma from bleeding out, but because of the injury in the head, she couldn't resist it and she went into a coma. I'm sorry Callie. I don't know when she is coming out of it but we will do everything to take care of her."
Mark suddenly grabbed Callie. She couldn't believe that this was happening. Arizona left, came back, Callie about to get married to Laura, Arizona leaving but comes back severely injured and now she is in a coma for who knows when. "Why Mark? Please tell me this is a dream and I will wake out of it. Tell me she is not hurt. she can't be." Callie started to cry and all Mark could do was to make sure he didn't cry as well because then Callie would really break down. All everybody could hope for is for Arizona to wake up, but now what needed to be done is go over how they are going to check the spine, and making sure they don't lose her in the OR table
