The Trouble with Love 22/22
The moment Oliver saw his son; he picked Connor up and enveloped his son with his
embrace. When Connor saw Chloe, he turned his body sideways and reached out for her.
Chloe grinned as she gave Connor a quick kiss on the forehead before accepting his half
embrace. “How are you?”
“I was so worried about dad and you!” he replied while lips trembled with his response.
“We’ll were here now, and we’re fine.” Chloe tried to reassure the young boy.
“Chloe, thank God!” Lois cried out as she grabbed Chloe for a tight embrace.
“We were so worried! What happened to you?”
“It’s a long story.” Oliver replied as he looked down at Connor who buried his face
against his neck.
“You both need to see the doctor, and the MPD wants to speak to you soon.”
As soon as Lois said the words, Oliver and Chloe were separated and escorted in to two
different rooms. Connor made Chloe promise to sign his cast when she’s ready.
She looked back and watched as Connor snuggled against Oliver and smiled a little as
she heard Connor tell Oliver about his stay in the hospital. With a sigh, she followed
the doctor towards her own room. She squeezed her cousin’s hand as she remembered Oliver’s
confessions back at the cave. Lois looked at her, and Chloe just shook her head.
“It’s good to see you, Lo.”
“Good to see you too.” Lois replied. She knew that expression on her cousin’s face,
but she was going to wait for the doctor before she asks her questions.
In Washington, Lex looked displeased as the fireplace destroyed the evidence of the file
he was given. As he expected, Malcolm Sanders had tried to betray him and shot his clone dead.
Did Sanders really think he was going to see him himself?
The clone was disposed off, and he was assured that there was nothing in the facility to
indicate his clones were discovered. Just to make sure, Lex ordered his men to destroy
most of the clones underneath the building. The rest were transported to a secure facility
outside the United States.
His plans may not have worked, but he was going to make sure that Oliver Queen and all his
friends will not stop him from what he was born to do, to protect the Earth from people like Clark.

“Are you really okay, dad?”
“Yeah, I am buddy. The doc already gave me a clean bill of health, remember?”
Connor just frowned as he looked at his dad. “I’d rather hear it from Dr. Emil.”
Oliver chuckled and ruffled his son’s hair. “What about you?”
Connor grinned as he showed his dad his cast. “I was waiting for you and Aunt Chloe to
sign so Jason and my friends can sign too!”
“Well, let me do the honours then.” Oliver said as Connor handed him a pen. He looked
at Connor who just grinned.
Oliver signed on his son’s cast, and the smile Connor gave him warmed his heart. “Thanks, dad!”
“Connor. I’m sorry for what happened, okay?”
Connor looked at him apprehensively before he spoke. “Did I do anything to make you mad, dad?”
“No!” Oliver replied as he tried to give Connor a hug from the bed. “No, Connor.
It wasn’t you... I... just wasn’t feeling well, and I was the one who was wrong, okay, buddy?”
“So you’re not sending me away?”
“Never.” Oliver replied as he gave his son a kiss on the forehead. “I’m never doing that.”
“I love you, dad.”
“Love you too, Connor.” Oliver replied and closed his eyes as his son held him tighter.
Inside her room, Chloe should’ve known Lois was up to something when her cousin insisted
on primping her up. Lois gave that full wattage smile while Clark tried not to look at
his girlfriend when George walked in with a bouquet of flowers.
“George!”
“Chloe, I’m glad you’re safe.” George said as he handed her the fresh flowers.
“I’m so sorry for what happened to you,” Chloe said as Clark gave George a chair to sit on.
“Are you okay?”
George rubbed the spot behind his neck where the dart hit him and grinned. “Yeah, I
actually had a good night’s sleep for the first time in months.”
“Well, Clark and I are just going to the cafeteria to get something to eat. Do you
guys want anything?”
“No, I’m fine. Thank you for asking.” George replied and Chloe just shook her head
and sighed when Lois gave her a wink.
“So, just to give you a heads up, someone from the MPD would want to speak to you, Oliver and Connor.”
“I’m not really sure what I can say. I was blindfolded the rest of the way.” Chloe replied
glad that she didn’t have to lie about that.
“Is there any reason why you were both taken?”
“Not a lot of people are happy with what I do with Isis, I made a few enemies when I was
writing for the Planet, it’s actually kind of scary that there’s a long list of reasons
why someone’s after me.” Chloe replied trying to lighten the mood.
George just smiled, but she knew that she wasn’t fooling him even for a second.
“I’m sure the officer in charge would want to hear it from you.”
“You won’t handle the investigation?” Chloe asked in surprise and George nodded his head.
“I thought you were in charge because of what happened at the museum?”
“I was.” George replied. “Until we realised there were bigger things involved, and I don’t
think I’m the best man for the job considering I might be compromised.”
“Compromised?”
“I like you, Chloe.”
Chloe tried not to look startled. She knew he was interested in her, but to hear it from
him still shook her up a bit.
“I like you, very, very much. I can’t be involve in this investigation and see you as a
witness and at the same time see you as a woman that I am interested in.”
“George...”
“I’m not asking for a happily ever after Chloe, I just want to ask you to give me a chance,
if I have one. I know you have a history with Oliver Queen, and I’ll stand aside if I know I
don’t have a chance with you.”
Chloe opened her mouth and closed it again, unable to find the words to say. Oliver’s words
back at the cave haunted her as she looked at George.
“Well...” George just said as he looked away, taking her silence as her answer. “I just wanted
to make sure you were alright.”
“There’s nothing between Oliver and I anymore.”
The words were out of Chloe’s mouth before she could stop them. “We just work together occasionally,
and Connor is really special to me... and that’s it.”
“Okay.” George replied as he looked at her, and Chloe felt her cheeks redden at his
attention. “Okay...”
“I can’t promise you anything.” Chloe said softly and George hesitantly moved his hand over
hers as if he was waiting for a cue. When she didn’t move her hand away, he gently clasped it
with his own.
“You don’t need to Chloe; all I’m asking for is for you to give me a chance.”
Chloe looked at George who gazed at her with such an open honesty that she couldn’t stop a
smile form on her lips.
“Okay.”
Outside her room, Oliver stayed outside as he listened to the whole conversation. He slowly
walked away back to his room where Jason and Connor were talking. He meant everything that he
said back at the cave, that he loved her, still loves her. All the years he watched aside,
content with just seeing her, hearing her voice was enough for him.
Now, he wasn’t sure if it was going to be enough. He wanted to ask for a second chance with
her, but he knew he had sprung too much on her already, and he didn’t want to overload her
too much. But now, he was too late.
His thoughts were interrupted when he felt someone cough behind him getting his attention.
“John?”
The Martian detective grinned as he extended his hands which Oliver returned with a
handshake. “Glad to see you’re back, Oliver.”
There was something in his voice that indicated he wasn’t just talking about his return
to Metropolis. “How are you?”
“Good... everything’s fine. I’ll be seeing Emil tomorrow. I just want to be sure whatever
it was in my system isn’t going to be a problem anymore.”
“That’s a very wise decision.” John replied as he smiled. Now, Oliver was even more
suspicious as John just gave him that smile with a twinkle in his eyes.
“Are you here because of the MPD?
“I am.” John replied. “I was quite happy to be handling this case; it would probably make
things a little smoother for everybody when I’m typing up that report.”
Oliver just gave John a curious look. “You were given this case?”
“Yes, and I’m proud to say that I didn’t even have to do anything special to get it.”
Oliver just nodded his head, and the smile from John slipped a little. “Oliver?”
“Yes?”
“My life here on Earth has taught me many things, sometimes, they lead to more questions
than answers, and affairs of the heart have always perplexed me.”
“People say they act in a certain way because of love. Sometimes, love means letting go...”
Oliver just nodded his head, but John wasn’t finished.
“And sometimes, love means fighting back, even when it looks like all hope is lost. It’s
the beauty of being human, out of all the flaws this race has, the ability to love, to hold
on and to fight for that love is something truly admirable.”
“Is there something you want to tell me?” Oliver asked and John just gave him that smile again.
“None at all, Oliver. None at all.”
Two weeks later, Jason and Connor sat in Connor’s room at the penthouse playing the latest
Wii game before the friends parted for the summer.
“Are you ready for your trip?”
“Yeah! Dad’s taking me all around Asia this time!” Connor replied happily as he returned
the volley from Jason.
Jason nodded his head, happy for his friend. “I’m going with Bailey, she’s going to
teach me all about organic food!”
“All summer?” Connor asked wrinkling his nose. “That’s like work!”
“I know it is!” Jason replied. “But if I’m going to beat Subway, then I need to have a game plan on!”
Connor nodded in agreement. “I’ll be your investor!”
“Really?” Jason asked and Connor grinned.
“Yep!”
“You can have all the peanut butter sandwiches you want, I’ll develop a special range for
you so you don’t need to worry about your dad!”
“Cool!”
Jason groaned as he lost another match and his gaze fell on a golden trimmed box on Connor
book case. “Hey, what is that?”
“Oh... I forgot about that!” Connor replied as he reached for the box and opened it.
“I found it a few days ago, and dad gave it to me. He said it belonged to my mom.”
“Can I see?” Jason asked and Connor nodded his head as he opened the box.
Connor reached for a photograph of him as a baby. He looked around the various contents and
opened a small light blue box that made Jason gasp.
“Wow! Bailey bawled her eyes out when her boyfriend gave her that box.”
“Really?” Connor asked. His sister was always so serious; it was hard to imagine Bailey crying.
“U-huh. Then she opened the box and she cried some more.”
Connor opened the lid and saw a diamond ring that glittered with the sun’s rays. He gave it
to Jason who just stared at it and carefully closed it before putting it down. “What else
is in there?”
“Some of her jewelleries...” Connor replied as he looked at a small ring and a few bangles.
It felt weird holding something that belonged to his mother. His dad had talked about her
a few times, so it was almost like he knew her.
“Hey look! It’s your mom’s diary!”
Connor took the purple notebook from Jason and held it in his hands. He didn’t know if he
should read it, it was her diary. It was meant to be private. Connor and Jason found that
first hand when Jason found his older’s sister’s diary.
He’d never seen Bailey so mad.
“Should I read it?” he asked hesitantly, and Jason shrugged.
“Maybe you should flick through it... she was your mom, she wouldn’t mind, right?” Jason
asked with uncertainty as he looked at the notebook.
Connor flipped it open, and a small letter fell out. He picked it up and looked in surprise
at the name at the envelope.
“Chloe Sullivan... Isn’t that your Aunt Chloe?” Jason asked and Connor nodded his head.
His curiosity won over and he opened the envelope and took the letter out.
“Dear Chloe, I know you wouldn’t want to hear anything from me, but I’m not writing
this to you to gloat. I wanted to tell you how sorry I am about what happened between
Oliver and I. By the time you read this, I would be gone from his life, every time I get
the courage to come see you face to face, I lose that courage and I can only hope that
you read this letter in its entirety.
He loves you, and only you. Getting involved with Oliver was never part of my plan, but Connor
is the best thing that ever happened to me, I couldn’t imagine my life would be without him.
I would never take Connor away from his father, but I need, I want to be with someone who would
love me the way he loves you.
I can only hope that you forgive him, and that you don’t begrudge him for having Connor in his life.
I’m so deeply sorry for the pain I caused you, but you need to know. It only happened once,
and we both agreed that what happened between us was a mistake and I never saw him again after
that night. The only reason I went back to Start City because he deserved to know about the
pregnancy. I never wanted anything, or expected anything of him. His offer to marry me stemmed
from the responsibility that he felt he owed me, and I made the mistake of accepting, thinking
that it would make everything right, but I was wrong. This is why I am writing to you know. You
need to know how much he loves you, I am not going to go through a marriage and raise our son in
an environment where his parents don’t love each other. I know it’s a little too late, and I can’t
turn back time...
Connor stopped reading the letter. His mother never finished it, but even if she did, he didn’t
know if he could continue.
“Dude... your Aunt Chloe and your dad?”
Connor couldn’t speak. He read through the letter again in his head, unable to believe what
he read. His Aunt Chloe and his dad were together... and he and his mom was the reason why
they weren’t together anymore.
Jason looked at Connor in concern. “Hey, Connor... are you okay?”
Connor shook his head and Jason quickly folded the letter and placed everything
back in the box. “Breathe!”
“I... I didn’t know...”
“How could you? It’s not like it’s something they can just say to you.”
The two friends stayed silent, unable to believe what they just discovered.
“Are you going to say anything to your dad?”
“I don’t know, should I?” Connor asked and Jason just blew his hair away from his face.
“Well, your mom sounded like she was really sorry and she wanted your Aunt Chloe
and your dad to be together.”
He loves his Aunt Chloe, and he always wanted her around. She made everything okay
when she smiled. He loves his dad too; he wants to be like his dad when he grows up.
He never met her, but he loves his mom, and his dad had always told her was smart and
brave his mom was fighting for people who couldn’t fight back.
Connor opened the box and took the letter again. He opened it and read it one more time.
His mom wanted his Aunt Chloe and his dad to be together.
“Are you going to tell your dad, or your Aunt Chloe?”
“If I did, they’ll know I read the letter!”
Jason nodded his head in understanding. The last time they read something that didn’t
belong to them; they got in so much trouble. “So, what are you going to do?”
Connor gave Jason a determined look. “I’m going to do what my mom never got to do.
I’m going to bring them back together.”
*The End*
A note on Sandra: In this chapter, and from what I’ve read, Sandra Hawke was a hippie.
In my mind, she was like Sandra Bullock in Two Weeks notice, a lawyer and a hippie -
which was why Oliver described her as someone who fights for people who can’t fight back.
This letter scenario had been building in my head since the start of this fic, and I wanted to
illustrate in this chapter how much Sandra realized that marrying Oliver won’t make things better
for everyone involved.
I just wanted to get all the Lex related issues out of the way. While it’s still going to be in
the sequel, the sequel is more about Chloe, Oliver, and you guessed it, George.
I know there are some of you who want Chlollie, or Chlorge, and that will happen in the sequel.
With Chloe, I see her as someone who can really hold a candle for someone for a long, long,
time no matter how that person treats her or feels about her *cough*Clark*cough
I didn’t see it a stretch to still feel a little bit something towards Oliver despite the fact
that he cheated on her.
I hope I didn’t disappoint, and I just want to thank you all for all your comments, your support
throughout this fic, and the next one will be more about Chloe, and the men in her life.
Did I mention there’s going to be a sequel?
