The Captain awoke slowly, the gentle buzz of the TARDIS tickling the back of her mind as she stretched lazily before realising the ship was in flight. With a broad grin she rolled out of bed quickly and reached for her clothes with glee. Another adventure beckoned...

Jack grinned as his daughter emerged from the depths of the TARDIS, her hat almost knocked from her head as a jolt sent her into the doorway. With a muttered oath she hurried across the room to take her place beside them, the ships flight steadying somewhat as she handled the controls. “Seriously boys, you could just wait for me to get up rather than having every trip be like living in a carnival fun house.” The Doctor laughed as he whacked the console with the hammer and she rolled her eyes as the ship bucked in response. “Typical men. If at first it doesn’t work, whack it harder.” With a sigh she leaned over and stroked the spot he had just hit and the ship steadied again, making both men stare at her for a moment. “Woman’s touch.” With a twist of the dials on her section they steadied out further and she glanced at the monitor quickly. “Earth?”

“Yep!” The Doctor bounced past her, letting her slide round to take his place nearest the chair whilst Jack worked his third of the console. “Earth, boring I know, but I just can’t get enough of the place, must be something in the air. Maybe it’s the grass, you know proper old fashioned grass. I mean apple grass is lovely but sometimes you can’t beat the original.” Jack chuckled as he shifted to swap places with his daughter, the three of them dancing from position to position without needing words as they had been doing it for so long.

“Or maybe it’s just the cryptic message someone sent me.” With a flick of his wrist a mobile phone went flying through the air towards her and she caught it deftly, checking the messages whilst pumping the TARDIS quickly.

“’Fancy a cup of tea?’ That’s it?” Jack nodded as she slid under his arms, ducking down to reach another control and slipping the phone in his trouser pocket as she passed.

“That’s all she - or he - wrote. But it’s strange, I checked the data source and the message came from Torchwood Cardiff. The computer sent it.” The Captain froze for a moment, the ship bucking again before she regained concentration and smacked a button hard.

“But that’s impossible. The whole site is sealed, abandoned. There’s nothing there.” Jack looked at her, mildly curious at the certainty in her voice but let it pass.

“Exactly. Which of course makes this a mystery.” The Doctor grinned manically, slipped between them both to press one final button and cause the ship to begin to materialise safely.

“And I do love a good mystery!”

*********************************

They parked on the Plass as usual, the TARDIS immediately latching onto the energy of the rift like a hungry child as Jack opened the controls up to it. He smiled as the TARDIS glowed contentedly before using his wrist strap and the TARDIS computers to patch through into the hub. The Captain sat in the chair, something bothering her but she couldn’t put her finger on what. The Doctor, a restless bundle of energy as always, was beside Jack. Together they coaxed the tiny flare of life that was the remains of the hub computers into action and grinned as data began to stream onto the screen.

“Yes!” Jack beamed as he quickly located the source of the signal then his grin faded as he took in the information. “That can’t be right.” The Doctor frowned over his shoulder and shrugged as he spoke.

“Jones. Ianto?” Jack nodded slowly and the Captain looked up at them both in confusion.

“But he’s....” She shivered slightly as she remembered carrying his body through the Torchwood morgue in London, Sarah Jane by her side. “Most definitely dead.” Jack nodded and gazed at her sadly but with a slight touch of gratitude in his eyes.

“Exactly. This message was written... Hell a good 20 years ago. He time delayed it for now and set it on automatic. The computer down there has been asleep all this time and kicked on just to send me a message... Wait there’s a file attached. Hang on, it’s encrypted.” With a few flicks on his wrist strap a scramble of letters flooded onto the screen with the familiar blue swirls of the Hub systems overlapping the familiar cog style Gallifreyan symbols in the background. She rose out of her seat at last and joined them, slipping in front of her taller father and watching as the stream of characters began to resolve into a proper sentence at last. Other data also began to take shape in the background. “What the...” The Captain began to get an uneasy feeling as the message came through.

“Any...” She frowned as she read the word out loud before the Doctor took over.

“Last...” Jack shook his head as the last word appeared, accompanied by a significant surge in the speed of the data download.

“Requests.” Sparks started to fly as the console lights flared brightly, a whine starting deep within the machine. “Oh hell n-” With a crack she found herself flying backwards, dimly aware of her dad hurtling through the air behind her before with a smack her head impacted with the grill and stars filled her vision as everything faded to black.
