It was on Draxis Three that he finally spotted her doing it.  He saw her hand slip into her jeans pockets when she thought he wasn't looking and remove something, rubbing it between her fingertips before pulling back her hand and flipping it into the river below.  "You're not littering I hope!"  Rose jumped, her hand rising to her chest as she turned around, blushing slightly when she saw him watching.

"I thought you were off buying that, that...  whatchamacallit."  He slouched, hands in his pockets as he stood beside her watching the river rage below.

"Already done it.  So....."  He bumped into her slightly, nudging her with his shoulder.  "What were you doing?"  She blushed again and shrugged slightly.

"You'll laugh."  He looked at her for a moment, all seriousness again and smiled softly.

"Never."  She smiled back and looked down at the raging water, leaning against him gently.

"I had this friend, she was an exchange student, stayed with us for a week.  I couldn't aff...  I didn't want to visit her in return but she came to stay for a week and we did all those tourist things.  Anyway, we were by the Thames one day and she took a penny and threw it in.  I thought she was barmy but she said it was a tradition.  When you visit somewhere you throw a penny in the water before leaving.  That way it will bring you back one day and you will see that place again."  She blushed deeper and rested her head on his shoulder.  "I just thought, you know, it's been such a nice day..."  He wrapped one skinny arm around her and stared out at the lilac stream with her, the sun setting in the distance casting strange lights on the ripples.

"You might want to come back sometime."  She nodded and cuddled up against his chest.

"Silly huh?"  He pulled a face and dug his free hand deeper into his pocket, digging around until emerging with a single copper penny snagged between his fingers.

"Oh I don't know, not all superstitions and traditions are without some basis in reality. Soooooo" with a flick of his wrist he tossed the coin into the water, watching it sink into the lilac depths before turning back to her with that manic grin.  "Better safe than sorry."  He slid his hand back from her body and took her hand instead.  "Come on then.  Sooner we leave sooner we can come back."  Rose grinned and nodded, then hesitated.  She slipped her fingers out of his and into her pocket retrieving another penny.  She rubbed it then slipped it into his top pocket, her fingertips lingering on the striped fabric for a moment too long.  "What's that for?"  She smiled shyly and took his hand again, her fingers wrapping through his tightly.

"So I can always come back to you."  She shivered slightly in the cooling air as the suns began to set.  "Right, enough traditions for one day.  You promised me dinner, remember?"

Donna tossed the coin into the fountain, her eyes shut tight as she made a wish.  "Oh not you too.  What is it with humans and throwing your money away?  One minute its good luck to find a penny, then a bad penny turns up and then the next minute you're throwing it away again so you can come back to it later or thinking it can grant you a wish!"  She harrumphed as she turned to him, her arms folding across her chest.

"What, haven't you ever wished for something?"  He looked serious for a moment, just that second too long she had come to recognise all too well as him hiding something.

"Don't be daft, I don't need silly human superstitions."  Donna rolled her eyes, moving closer to him as she scowled.

"Oh yeah?  Well when I was a kid I once made a wish that I would get to see the Pyramids and you know what..."  She pointed into the distance, the top peak of the Great Pyramid all too visible over the horizon.  "I just did.  So it does work Mr Logic.  Sometimes you just have to wait a while."  Her face softened slightly and she smiled at him now, her arms unfolding and offering a penny to him.  "And believe.  So go on Doctor, make a wish.  You never know, it just might come true."  He took the penny and raised his eyes to the skies in mock disgust.

"Oh all right, throw your money away."  He tossed it into the fountain quickly, but Donna caught that second when he closed his eyes, those little frown lines appearing as he made his wish.  "There, happy now?"  She nodded, forcing her arm through his and dragging him off.

"Getting there, come on you, you promised me a shopping trip, remember?"  As she pulled him along he couldn't help his fingers slipping to his jacket pocket and the penny still nestled there.  Maybe he just hadn't waited long enough yet.  With a slight shake of the head he banished the thought away.  She couldn't come back, it just wasn't possible, he had worked through every angle in his head, it was completely and utterly impossible, nope, no way, no sireeee.

But somehow that hadn't been enough to stop him wishing for it anyway.
