Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer. It's the story of what happened when he went on an expedition to Everest in 1996 & a storm rolled in & contributed to tons of problems, leading to the death of a significant portion of the people Krakauer was with. The end of the book, where I am now, also deals with Krakauer's survivor's guilt, his opinions on what happened in hindsight, the reactions of the loved ones of the people who died to his original article written six months after the tragedy, etc. It's a little bit brutal. If you've read Into the Wild, this is, in many ways, similar, except for that fact that Krakauer actually lived this one & most of it is written from his perspective.
It's sad, both because you feel for Krakauer & because of the sheer amount of death & hardship these people went through, & the aftermath of it all. Every single person involved on the trip was changed by the experience. That much is clear. It's not an uplifting read, by any means, but it's interesting, compelling, & moving.
