Freaking Technology

So, as most people know, I'm a huge technophile. I love new gadgets, and love tinkering to get them to work. However, if that tinkering fails to solve a problem, and this problem exists for almost a year, I start to get frustrated.

Cue my TV, which is connected via HDMI to my computer. Every time I turn it on or off (or the power state changes with the signal in any way [EG Receiver is on and Xbox is on, the receiver won't do HDMI pass through], my computer decides that a new piece of display hardware has been added, and all my monitors flash off and on a couple times as it adjusts the settings. As a result, my organized windows start bouncing around to either the TV or my secondary monitor, and I have to spend several minutes getting them back to the primary monitor (3-display setup for those who don't know).

What's worse, some programs don't even handle being shifted against their will gracefully, and will crash, resulting in even more lost time as I reset them and get them back to their previous status. Last night, I logged in right as it noticed a change and it actually crashed my display driver, leading to a blue-screen that had my entire computer reset.

Am I incorrect in wanting my TV to behave like any other LCD monitor, in that powering it on or off doesn't change the state of the system? It'd be really handy if I could get this to work...
