Thoughts on the passing of a president.

Jun 05, 2004 17:36

Say what you will about Reagan and his politics, but I still think today is a day that gives me something to think about.

Reagan was the president for my formative years, and probably the reason why I initially registered Republican.

There's something to be said for how he and his handled major crises -- like the Challenger explosion -- and he certainly had his share of soundbytes.

I find it hard to believe that it was nearly 10 years ago that he went on national television and announced he had Alzheimer's. I think he did much to advance awareness of the disease, and I admire Nancy greatly for stepping out of the Republican shell and advocating for stem cell research.

And, on a minor note, I can't help but smile at the fact that Geoff and Reagan died less than a year apart. At least Geoff has someone with whom to argue politics now.

Damn, I wish I were working today. I wish we had a Sunday edition.
