I woke up this morning thinking about flawed characters, but was expecting a house full of people so I never really managed to sort it all out. Now, people have left (thank GOD! Couldn't take much more toddler/baby fun... *shudders*), my house is clean again, and I'm heading off to bed shortly because tomorrow is a school day. But I just can't get these two character's issues out of my head and would love to get some other opinions.
One of them: A human-turned-vampire who has a hard time saying no. This tends to lead to him having sexual encounters with those he cares for (in addition to his main partners) because to him, to really connect is to have sex. Then there's that whole feeding bit because he's an incubus... The invitation for sex is always there. And I think he's growing tired of trying to figure out how to make it all work -- all the while kind of coming to a point of where he's accepting that he'll always be this way. Does giving in to his flaw make him weak?
The other: A narcotics officer (in a leadership position) who has a little thing for weed. Not an all the time thing, mind you. But if he's had a shitty day, he might have a glass of wine and maybe share a joint with a close friend. Does that make him less believable? Less likable as the love interest? Less credible in his day job? Does it make him seem like he's a real jack-ass for being hard on the drug dealers on the streets while he's breaking the same laws and not paying the price for it?
