This, like every other idea of his host sister's, was insane. Ash had sworn to his father that he would stay in school at least while he was in Japan, and staying in school did not include illegal lunchtime jaunts to cafes. Especially not a cafe so near Waseda. What if kaasan showed up? Megumi had insisted her mother never came in here, preferring the Starbucks closer to the hospital, and then had promptly spotted a friend also giving herself lunch leave and run out into the rain. It was like Ni-chome all over again, but without the men trying to pick him up.
Ash sighed at his hot chocolate, questioning his own sanity when he expected it to sigh back. He'd really been spending too much time with Pukamon and his tendency to personify anything edible. Taking a sip, he wondered briefly if anyone would be offended if he took a few photos. The cafe had the same atmosphere as any number of cafes Katia had dragged him into back home, and mixing the photos from the two countries to show the differences and similarities would make for an interesting folio next year.
He glanced up from his drink and blinked when he spotted a man with blue hair and glasses. His common sense informed him that it probably wasn't the same guy, but blue hair wasn't that common, was it? And Jou had mentioned on his Livejournal once that he was at Waseda University...
"Jou?" Ash called out, curious.
(OOC: Sorry this is wordy, I was in NaNo mode when I wrote it. o.o;;)
Jou was just about to pass Ash's table when someone called out his name. This didn't happen very often outside of work, so it took the young doctor's brain a moment to recognize that he had indeed been called upon.
He stopped at the table and looked down at the younger boy. "Uh, hello? Can I help you?" He had never met Ash before, so he didn't quite know what he looked like.
Oops, Ash knew that had been a slightly stupid idea. "Er, maybe..." Struck by an idea, he took out his digivice, ostensibly to look at the time. Hopefully he'd look casual enough to pass for checking a virtual pet if it turned out this wasn't Chosen!Jou and just a guy with the same color hair and the same name. "This is going to sound crazy, but have you ever been to Australia?"
"Yes I have" Jou answered, still staring at the young man uncertainly. Jou had the strange feeling that he was supposed to know him from somewhere, but wasn't sure how. Then he remembered his poor neglected livejournal account and some of the people on it.
"Yeah, it is!" Jou set his drink on Ash's table, moments before remembering his manners and withdrawing it. Far be it from him to get ahead of himself and presume anything of anyone. In fact he was already beginning to regret coming here on the count of his faux pas, despite how minor it might have been. "Oh sorry, were you waiting for someone?"
This was getting a little awkward. For a moment, Ash wished he'd been man enough to follow Megumi out of there, instead of being too sick of the rain and going inside the cafe. "No, it's fine," he said quickly. "I did come here with my host sister, but she ditched me as usual. That girl is too popular for her own good."
Jou set his bag beside the seat and sat down across from Ash. "Well, you won't ever have to worry about that from me. I hardly meet the criteria for popularity. Usually you'd think the guy who's always there would be popular, but it seems to be the reverse for me."
"Gutted," Ash replied sincerely, warming his hands on his hot chocolate. He half-wondered if his meaning would translate well into Japanese, but moved on anyway. "I wouldn't know, I'm usually the guy who isn't really there. The main reaction when it got out that I was going on exchange was, 'who?'"
