Critter Issues

I just realized I've been blogging on MySpace, but not here.

I took Kendra into the vet yesterday and she ended up having to get emergency surgery for stones in her bladder. I noticed on Sunday that she just wasn't acting right. I thought maybe it was because my mom had been here to visit and had left on Sunday and maybe she was just a little depressed (she was mom's dog for the first 7 or so years of her life) because she wasn't really eating and was just hanging out in her kennel, which she does whenever she's in a funk. And/or maybe there'd been some thunder while I was over at a friend's house because I'd seen lightening, but hadn't heard anything. She wigs out over thunder.

She didn't want to come out of her kennel, but I got her to go outside a couple hours after I got home from my friends house on Sunday and the first thing she did was throw up. So I was like "Oh shit...well maybe her tummy is just upset." I had a "toy" party on Sat night, so I thought maybe someone had possibly snuck her some food that didn't agree with her, though she doesn't have quite the sensitive system that the pug does...

I kept an eye on her Monday....she was still hanging out in her kennel and not really wanting to come out and not eating. Every now and then she'd come outside. I called around to some emergency vets but they wanted like a minimum of $85 just to see her, plus a minimum 3 hour wait before she was even seen, so I figured that'd be last resort and I'd call the vet in the morning.

But I actually thought she was starting to feel better cuz Sunday night she came and snuggled me on the couch for a little bit, and even initially went to bed with me. But on Monday I noticed she kept trying to pee and couldn't. So I thought "Oh shit, maybe she has a bladder infection or something, better call the vet" cuz Phoebe gets those semi frequently and some antibiotics for a couple weeks clear it up.

Nope! Doc wanted to do an x-ray because she was concerned about some sort of infection in the uterus which can happen with older dogs who aren't fixed (the folks never got her fixed, and then I didn't do it either because as it turns out, she's got a slight heart murmur, which is common in the breed, but you really don't want to put them under anesthesia unless absolutely necessary). That's when they noticed the stones and that her bladder was really distended (like twice the size it should have been). Turns out there was a stone stuck in her urethra, which they said is really rare in female dogs. So yeah, she had to get surgery, and while they were at it, I told them to go ahead and spay her since she was already under. $1800 later..... ouch. My parents are so sweet though, they offered to pay half. Thank god for military discounts too, cuz I got like $205 off the bill.

Anywho, so the poor thing has stitches all the way up her tummy and she's on antibiotics and some pain killers. We have to take her back in 2 weeks to get the stitches out and possibly continue the antibiotics. She's going to have to be on a prescription diet for the rest of her life. They sent a sample of the stones off to get tested so they could see which kind exactly they were and can prescribe a diet for that. So that'll probably start next week.

Poor baby. I'm glad the surgery went fine though. I was really worried because of the heart murmur thing. And it took a little longer than normal because of that lodged stone.

She's got stones in her kidneys, but they didn't seem so worried about that at the moment.
