$1.79 worth of fun (each)

Today Elder Son came home and said, "They're upgrading the teachers!" It was a half day for both boys due to "Professional Development" so when Younger Son came in I handed them each a coconut. At the local grocery store, coconuts are $1.79 and worth every penny. First  we poked the coconut eyes out and drained the water.  ES and YS drank the water. Then they took their coconuts outside.

Elder Son spent a good long happy time with his coconut and a hammer until he managed to crack the thing. ES hates the flavor and texture of nuts, but he actually ate some coconut and pronounced it good. I refrained from pointing out the "nut" in coconut.

Younger Son had a different result in mind. He spent an ever longer happy time with his coconut and a saw. The resulting bowl has a rather unique lip, but he managed to get the top off.

YS's coconut is currently sitting in the oven baking. If the shell cracks or breaks as a result of this I'm going to hear about it for a long time. ES's coconut ended up in the blender. The resulting shreds are dripping through a sieve lined with coffee filters making coconut milk. I'm going to mix the strained shreds with sugar and make something with that. I don't know what.  We'll grate YS's toasted coconut.

Mostly all this is for fun, but partly it is to show the work that goes into food. Yes one can buy processed coconut from the grocery store, but this is what goes into a Mounds bar or the can of coconut milk.  There are some things that I'm willing to do over and over. I'd make my own yogurt if everyone ate yogurt in the house. Currently it is only ES and I. I haven't bought mayonnaise in a long time. Mayo is just too easy to make.  Bread and jam and pizza are also home made things in our house, although ES is 12 and goes through bread faster than I can bake it so I'm buying bread too.

Coconuts are for fun. I'm not making my own coconut milk or coconut candy, but coconuts are wonderful distractions :)
