I will!
The Wondercon weekend was great. Met Doug for a late dinner when we arrived Thursday night. We ate so late that plans to go to Meat at DNA Lounge got derailed. No loss. We were tired. And catching up with Doug was much fun. Haven't seen him in a long time.
On Friday we had breakfast at Mel's and then walked the dealer floor. Spotted a few items but didn't really purchase anything. Too bad. Some of those items were gone on Saturday when we returned. like this
cylon "Raiders" patch. We met Sean and Daisy for dinner at Nirvana in the Castro. Amazing food.
Our waiter was ridiculously cool since he was as big a comic fanboy as we were. He kept coming back to our table to chat between other orders. And he even gave us an invite to a Wondercon afterparty at his friend's comic book store. We left Sean and Daisy and walked toward Isotope, where the party was supposed to be after a pub crawl. We stopped in Lucky13 to rest at halfway point and arrived only to discover that we beat them there. Doug met us at Absinthe around the corner and we had a couple drinks before checking on them again. We gave up around 11:30pm. Turns out we made a good call. Rene and Japhet ran into the owner of the Isotope while they are on a tiki bar tour. Even SF is small.
On Sunday morning we hit the con just in time for the Watchmen panel with Zack Snyder, artist Dave Gibbons and the entire primary cast members. They showed at least the first 15 minutes. So much of it that Mr. Man got angry and marched up to the front of the room to ask Zack himself "WTF dude? We want to see this in the theater!" Zack assured him that the preview was near the end but yeah, we saw a pretty good chunk of it and all I have to say is wow.
The Minutemen montage during the opening credits was extraordinary. It culminated so much character development into just a few moments.
While new viewers may not know exactly what they're seeing at the time, I think once the story begins to unfold, they'll be grateful for the glimpse at the history. And I also think it helps set the tone for the world this movie inhabits.
A
recent review complained that the movie is too faithful to the book, saying Zack Snyder a just a mimic.
Rather than being a mimic, I would say that he's more of a translator. And I was floored by his interpretation of the book, or at least the parts I saw; Comedian's death, Rorschach in prison, Hollis and Dan, etc. Even though I too was a little disappointed that they showed as MUCH of the movie that they did. I wanted to experience everything on the big screen! IMAX even. I still cannot wait to see the rest of this film.
Zack Snyder also announced that there will be a DVD coming out in a couple weeks called
Tales of the Black Freighter & Under the Hood. I love that they planned ahead to release this while the movie is still in theaters. He said that in the fall, they'd release a full version of Watchmen with the Black Freighter and Bernie scenes spliced in.
I might finally have to invest in BluRay for this. I upgraded to DVD for The Matrix. It only seems fitting ;)
