Just Beyond the Peripheral

He watches the muscles in her back tense, mouth in a tight “O”, as she blows smoke out the hotel window. The breeze slips in brushing whispery and chilled across her skin, her scent fills the room and he breathes deep, inhaling her fleeting presence.

He kisses her throat from behind and it makes her hair stand on end. Between the night air and the contrasting warmth of his lips her skin aches and she snubs out the cigarette, turning round to kiss his jaw.

He’s charming (too charming) and it’s when he takes her back to bed she figures there is something waiting just beyond the peripheral, fragile and sharp.

She shuts her eyes.
