You Can't Take it With You

"My kid..."

"The child will go with its mother."

"That's nice and bloody archaic of you. What if she chooses to forget? I want to be with - "

"If Rose Tyler chooses to forget, it will be handled. You have no choice, Joshua Townsend, be happy that we will allow you to remember, if you wish."

Josh pounded his fists into the desk. He'd argued back and forth with the Time Lords for hours. He'd asked every Doctor he could find if there was a way for him to be with Rose. He'd used the last of his communicator's power (who knew the power went out when the job was done?) to beg the Rassilons, Chuck, anyone with power, to let Rose and Mickey stay with him, in his universe.

Tears clouded his vision. He glanced down at his left hand, to the ring there. Every breath made his chest feel as if it was collapsing. She'd finally married him, and now they had to go back across universes, never to see each other again. One part of his life destoyed. It would hurt so much to remember, but to forget... to leave behind everything he and Rose, and Mickey, and SJ and Nat... he couldn't do that. He loved them all, and even though he'd be with SJ back in his timeline, the memories of their time together here were too important to forget. They were a part of him.

By the time he reached the big secret door he was supposed to walk through, he'd composed himself. The Time Lord looked up him up and down. "The ring, Joshua Townsend."

"No. The ring stays. I want to remember, I can keep the ring. I helped save your bloody universe, mate, I think you can leave me the ring." Josh set his shoulders and waited for an argument. There was none.

When he walked into SJ's house, she was waiting for him. With Mickey in her arms. Josh felt hot tears run down his face. "How?"

SJ shook her head. "There was a note, Josh... from Rosey."

Swallowing past the lump in his throat, Josh didn't ask to read the note. He could do that later, when the pain had faded. He just nodded his head and took his daughter into his arms. "Hullo, junior. Welcome home."
