Black Flag - The First Four Years

The First Four Years succinctly compiles every Black Flag recording that had been issued before Henry became singer. Nervous Breakdown, Jealous Again, Six Pack, & Louie Louie all appear here in their entirety, as well as two compilation songs: "Clocked In," and "Machine." "Clocked In" is notable as the song that Rollins sang on stage with the band that convinced them to invite him to audition.

As far as compilation releases go, this is about as good as it gets. If you are new to Black Flag, (and not a collection junkie, like myself) there is no reason not to start with this album.

Also, as a fan of the art of Raymond Pettibon, I really dig the flyer art found inside the booklet. (I don't know if I have mentioned this before, but Pettibon, who is responsible for pretty much ALL Black Flag art, including the famous four bar logo, is Greg Ginn's brother. Coming of age in the punk rock scene in the '80's, the name Ray Ginn was not optimal, so he took on the last name Pettibon professionally.)

Henry Rollins has, on several occassions, indicated that this is far and away his favorite Black Flag release. While I don't totally agree (no album can EVER be better than Damaged,) I would be hard pressed to argue this opinion.

The First Four Years - 9 out of 10
