Marijuana in the US: A Somewhat Hypocrite Law

Oct 06, 2006 08:47

Today after college was something pretty ordinary. I went down to Taco Bell with Aaron for lunch, and then we dropped by Record Exchange. I really love talking to the guy that works there, for he really knows his metal. We get into these deep conversations about anything. Today we got into death, the Butterfly Effect, Ed Gein, personal hygiene, and also marijuana. This brings me to my next blog topic, marijuana in the US. Is it really so bad? We see commercials about it almost everyday, showing us it's harmful effects. We've seen why not to use it, because of the horrible gateway drug that it's supposed to be. Why is it illegal? Take a chill pill my friend, and hear my views about why I feel that marijuana is illegal.

First off, I'm reminded of a Chris Rock stand up comedy special that I saw on HBO awhile back. He mentioned marijuana and why he personally thought that it was illegal in the US. He talked about how the US doesn't make any profit off of marijuana. This is absolutely true. We don't earn any taxes, or money to go towards anything from this special herb. Money serves to the everyday joe, which could be a criminal, you never know. I completely agree with this. Let's take a deeper look.

We're given these anti-drug commercials which shows a teen with a melting head, or a commercial with a little girl lost because supposedly her marijuana using brother forgot about her. Complete bullshit. Marijuana doesn't cause a person to be retarded, if this were so, people wouldn't use it. The government personally doesn't care if marijuana were to damage ones health or not. For example, marijuana and cigarettes are talked about as if they were the devil, but what about alcohol? You don't really see anymore commericals about alcohol? Isn't alcohol dangerous? Alcohol is supposedly so dangerous that we as Americans can only buy it if we're 21 and we can't even drive if we've drunk it! But guess what? OUR COUNTRY PROFITS FROM IT! That's right, our country makes millions off of a liquid that is so dangerous it kills so many every day. So you're telling me alcohol is still allowed, but marijuana isn't?

I'd say that almost everyone has at least had an experience with marijuana or has at least knew someone who smoked it. It's not that big of a secret. I'm sure our parents have experienced with it, but they would probably never admit it. I mean c'mon, most of them lived through the 60's? Anyhow, the reason the government hates marijuana is because it personally kicks them in the ass. It's saying, "hey, now we're killing your kids and you don't profit from any of it." Stick to your alcohol and cigarettes, because we've got something better.

The public turns a blind eye to this side of marijuana. It's the ruiner of life, the killer of brain cells, but never a product that gives credit to the average joe and not the government and society. The only thing I see wrong with its secret service is that it may fall into the wrong hands. There are people in this country who would gladly shoot you in the back if the sales transaction was incorrect. This is where the concern comes in. It's an easy way out of work. Some make a living off of sales of marijuana. But wait, what about alcohol, cigarette, and fast food companies. Don't they do the same thing? Man, it's kind of crazy when I look at it this way.

Marijuana is illegal for the fact that money doesn't go into the proper hands. The world runs off of the Almighty dollar, so it's not surprising to see where all the controvery and chaos comes from. My advice is for the government to take control of marijuana and put it into their hands. If they sold marijuana, and gave it the same restrictions, such as alcohol(must be 21 to buy it, don't drive while you smoke it, whatever) or cigarettes. They could tax the hell out of it if they wanted to. People would still buy it.

I find the US to be a huge hypocrite in the fact that it sales alcohol and cigarettes gladly, but then spends so much money making commercials to stop people from using marijuana. It's like in the Kevin Smith movie "Clerks," whenever the fake cigarette salesman stops the sales of about 10 packs of cigarettes and encourages the customers to buy chewing gum instead. It turned out that the cigarette salesman was in fact a chewing gum salesman, so it wasn't the health of the customers in mind, it was the profit his company would make. It all comes down to money, not your health.

So the next time you see an anti-marijuana commercial, think to yourself, "is this really an honest commercial?" "Did somebody pay money to make money?" "Is this company really concerned about my health?" "Do all people that have used marijuana end control of their lives completely?" Like with everything, there is always more than meets the eye.

So am I saying that marijuana is 100% good. No. Am I saying that marijuana is 100% bad. No. All I'm saying is that I know the reason why marijuana is illegal in this country, and it's a shame. If it were illegal for anything, it should be for the fact that it could ruin your life, or it could cause you to get shot. Instead, it's illegal for money purposes.

To all that have read this blog with maturity, thank you for listening.
