Ok folks, I need some advice/help with some important life decisions!
I will (really really) soon be graduating from Muhlenberg College. Early in fact. I'll be done in December. So I'm applying to some graduate programs! Whether I actually go to school right away in 2010 or wait a little while is another discussion, but for now I was wondering if people could weigh in and tell me what you think about the places I'm thinking about applying or make suggestions of other places I should check out!
Basically I'm looking for a few things. A two year program, preferably something dealing with illustration and comics, and a master's degree. Location-wise I'm pretty open-ended. I'm not looking for a really competitive environment, mostly an emphasis on improving art and that kind of thing.
As of right now, I'm applying to:
-The Center for Cartoon Studies in White River Junction, VT: This program looks really fun and intensive in the area of art I obviously want to concentrate in (Coooommiiiics!). I've visited and talked with a lot of people about this place. Pros include close work with other people who are very prominent in the industry as well as a very focused curriculum based wholly around comics. Also, everyone there is very interested and passionate about comics and they have a lot of amazing resources and artists at their disposal. Cons: They are not accredited. I've been told varied things about how this actually affects the "masters" you receive. The location isn't "ideal" for me either, but I think that the seclusion is part of the experience of going there. Whether that's something I actually want to experience is something I'm still weighing.
-The School of Visual Arts in New York City, NY: I have yet to look very intensely at their illustration program, but I have heard some really good things from previous students about their undergrad program. I like the idea of being in NYC to be near some close friends and also around a lot of art and music. I plan on heading up to visit and look waaay more in depth into their program.
-Savannah College of Art and Design down in Georgia: I haven't looked too much into this program yet, so I'm hoping some of the SCAD folks in my friends can fill me in. It looks like a cool place and there's always seemed to be great work coming out! I've been following some graduate students work like
kar2nist and
davario (and I'm planning on trying to talk to them 1 on 1 about this too). I ordered some info from the school, but personal experiences are always really helpful.
Pleases feel free to let loose on the pros and cons of each place (I mean, don't be an ass, but it's important to know what's bad about places too). I'd love to hear about any other places that have illustration/comics programs! I'm sure there are some I haven't heard about before.
Thanks a whoooollle lot in advance, folks!
