This afternoon and evening I substantially added to Chapter Five to complete it. I end up exploring a few different threads to further build some characters and themes. It's…okay, for now.
The chapters have all been considerably longer than my chapters usually are. I wonder if that should concern me greatly. Even so, the longest is 8 pages, single-spaced in the 8.5x11" layout. I'm used to writing hard and fast, though. My prose is usually literary crack. Why The Willow Weeps might be a good opportunity for me to grow as a writer.
An unrelated matter: yesterday I came up with a new game idea, in blatantly spontaneous fashion. Don't worry, this isn't Yet Another Roguelike Idea. It's actually a board game, specifically a strategy game inspired by chess and shogi (insofar as I'm familiar with shogi variants, anyway). It draws elements from elsewhere as well. I've been thinking about the pieces and their attributes as well as the structure of the board. All pieces would move around the board in the same way, but their attack and defence abilities would vary. How you set them up and how you play them would help determine your success or failure. A deck of cards would also give you the opportunity to enhance your force at the beginning of the game. There are some very cool pieces that could break the game open for whoever uses them best (or wreck it for those who can't).
I'm still working on it. But in the least, a computer version could make an interesting (and feasible) programming challenge. I do need to get my feet wet again, after all. And if I could figure out how to provide online play, that could help me understand the needs of the art site concept more. Maybe Diaspora* could help with that, though? That would be awesome.
My cousin has been developing a board game for a long time himself. I'd really like to see his prototype.
