This is fairly trivial, but it's done, so I need to mentally rehearse it.
I've decided to change one of the staple roguelike foes - the jackal - to the coyote. It's the same niche essentially. The big roguelikes have a somewhat distinctly Eurasian flavour - aside from dire wolves, which I may include as well - but coyotes will lend a more American flavour to Soulthieves along with mountain goats (as opposed to ibex…es? ibices?). Just a little personality.
As a result, I changed the associated star sign and month, the Jackal, to the Coyote. Also, the goddess Martes's familiar and her associated totem is a coyote, so her altar murti will depict the Coyote for tribesfolk.
I…have to remember all this. It suggests other changes to come. For example, instead of werejackals or jackalweres, there'll have to be werecoyotes or coyoteweres (the difference being the former's basic form is human while the latter's basic form is canid). That is, if I bother putting in such a creature. I don't know if weres would have the summoning abilities that they do in ADOM, and I honestly don't remember exactly how they behave in NetHack aside from just periodically shapeshifting. On the other hand, if I did implement them, I could also implement a sort of therianthropic effect for the PC, which would basically be undesirable. I don't know that I would attach such an effect very closely to the Moon's cycle, since obviously the passage of game time would make it less of a hindrance in general.
Hm. This turned into much.
